2002 GMC Envoy Stuck in Reverse

its your transmission has problem could your reverse disc worn out or your reverse servo not functioning clug up or broken o ring or valve body leaking

usually a cable that moves when pressing brake pedal that takes gear lever out of lock allowing you to move gear lever. check the cable.

Remove the battery negative for 30 minutes to reset any ECMs and retry.

check the neutral safety switch. connected to the shift lever, keeps you from running the starter unless in park or neutral, AND it turns on the back up lights when in reverse.

If its stuck in reverse then it wont start, this could be a bad tranny or the shift cable broke or came loose, theres a braket under the dash that holds the shift cable before it connects to the shifter linkage arm and that braket sometimes gets loosened up and the other problem is the shifter tube may have broken. a good way to see if its the tranny or the shifter asm is to get under the truck make sure to block wheels and put e-brake on. dissconnect linkage at the tranny and move the selecter arm on the tranny, if it in reverse then it should move o click in one direction which is park and the other way is into neutral then drive and so on, try to get it into park and seeif truck starts, if it does then its not the tranyy but rather it the shifter, another thing before doing that have someone turn key on but dont try to start it just move the shifter and se if it moves the arm on the trany, you will see this from under the side of truck on driverside. good day.

They are activated by revese gear acctivation there may be a piunger switch by transmition linkage under truck look in this area..for the s/w .. it mey be stuck or broken or wires broke..

Yes it has a shift cable.

i would try to get down to the linkage adjustment and see if maybe it is not adjusted properly or if it jumped out of alignment. Place the transmission in park and the selector in park after loosening nut and then tighten down the nut.

I think the linkage came off the transmission. It is on the left side of the transmission, near the pan. There is a neutral safety switch that is used in that area. That's why the indicator is different than what the transmission is really in. The linkage arm may be worn and/or the shifter cable end is worn and will not stay on the linkage arm.

the reverse clutch has failed in the transmission, this will require the trans be torn down for repair.
