I have a 2001 Pontiac Montana. The instrument cluster (particularily the speedometer backlights) need to be replaced. I have taken the cluster out an found that my van requires the cluster to be separated in or to change out the small diode bulbs. Unfortunately I cannot access the bulbs because it appears that it is like a sealed unit despite having a bit of play between the mother board. It looks like the dials themselves are preventing access to the diodes. Do I have to purchase an entire guage cluster or is there a way to prceed without damging the guages??? Thanks

You got lucky before , their is no reset for gas gauge . The sending unit in the gas tank is needing to be replaced or the gas gauge . GM vehicles had bad stepper motors in the instrument cluster from 2003 to 2006 . Testing to find out which is the problem . How to repair GM Instrument Cluster Speedometer Gauge Stepper
Your best bet , take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop that has the diagnostic tools to find the problem . Test .don't guess .
Nope. The speedometer needs a signal from the vehicle speed sensor to operate. Is the check engine light on? If so, scan for any codes that may indicate a VSS problem. If no codes, possible internal cluster issue with the speedometer head
if the odometer is working then the problem is with the speedometer head unit as the odometer gets its information from the same source as the speedometer. you can have the speedometer head checked and fixed if its fixable.

Sounds like a bad stepper motor in the instrument cluster. These are known to go bad. I had the same issue with my speedometer. Found the part on EBay for around $10. The hardest part with replacing it is that you have to unsolder the old one from the circuit board and then solder the new one on. There are a few good DIYs online that show you how to do it step by step.

Unfortunately, GM really screwed up the 2003-2006 instrument panels and there have been thousands of problems but not recalls so far. You might want to consider a complete rebuild of your instrument cluster. There are multiple on-line places that you can send your instrument panel into and they will completely rebuild your instrument cluster and replace the dashboard lighting also. Most of them charge in the $200.00 range for this service.
I take it that it doesn't work at all. I'd replace the insterment cluster and see if that cures it. You can pick one up at a pull-a-part for around ten bucks.
