You may need to remove the air cleaner or dog house to gain access. Identify the faulty cylinder.
They have an individual coil for every plug on this engine. Do you have a check engine light on if so if you retrieve the code it should be a P030X misfire code the X being a number between 1 and 8 identifying the cylinder that is misfiring. #1 being the passenger side front - #4 passenger rear #5 driver front #8 driver rear. They go in order 1-4 passenger side 5-8 driver side. Remove the coil it is a 7mm bolt and pull it out.

The 1997 V8 engine in the car is fitted with coil packs which are quite visible on the top of the engine. These need to be replaced when they eventually fail as is common.

follow the sparkplug wires..One end goes to the plugs..The other end goes to the coil...If you dont have sparkplug wires then you have coil-over coils..Thats where the coil sits right over the spark plug...

My ford econoline 1997 e250 has intermittent misses at idle and acceleration cruising speeds
One of the coil packs are starting to go out. One way you can pin point it is to buy one coil pack and replace one. If it still misses keep moving the spare one to the next coil pack until you find it. If you take it somewhere to be fixed it will run about $275 for each coil pack and up from the dealer. If you do it yourself and some time cost will be $70 for a coil pack. I know cause I just went through the problem at 120,000 miles.

follow the spark plug wires up to the coil pack there is only one coil pack for your truck which has all the plug wires going to it.also replace your your plug wires.
