I just installed a steering column shift mechanism. After installing it my truck would turn over. But, wouldn't start. Prior to the installation I had absolutely no problems with it starting. Even during the process of installing the part I started my truck several times with no problems. It just occurred after the installation was complete. Thank you... Derek

you most likely have a bad key switch cylinder assembly. you can try to spray wd40 solvent into the switch before you have the switch replaced,but sometimes it's a switch replacement that repairs the problem. have you inspected your ignition key to look for damage to the key itself? try a spare key to make sure it's the key,and not the key switch. you can also try turning the key while turning the steering wheel at the same time to get the key to work.sometimes the switch locks when parked in a bind,such as on a hill,or against a curb and so on. try this 1st before you have the ignition switch replaced. AAA auto club,if you're a member covers part of the replacement costs for a replacement switch also. you may have coverage through a cell phone also.one more thing to try, if you have a tilt steering column,try to reposition the steering wheel to see if you can get the key to turn. remember never force it enough to break your key off into the switch! thank you for choosing fixya.com!

Hi my name is Ben. The mechanic is telling you the truth. Chevrolet uses what they call the PassLok system. Even though there is no security chip in your key, there is still a security chip in the ignition switch which must be bypassed for the remote start to work. The actual bypass module is relatively cheap, but it does require extra labor to install. I hope this helps.

Key cylinder replacement on 1995 F 150
To replace that you turn the key to the run position and remove the trim panel around the column than you will see a small hole in the steering column housing right under the key and than you put a small pick in the hole and push the pin in and pull the assembly out. This is one of the easiest things there is to do, first disconnect the battery ground cable, next, all you have to do is turn the iginition to the run posistion, check the next steps:

Remove the steering column shroud and lower the steering column.
Disconnect the switch wiring at the multiple plug.
Remove the two nuts that retain the switch to the steering column.
Lift the switch vertically upward to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove the switch.
When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in the LOCK position for correct adjustment. To hold the mechanical parts of the column in the LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to the LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are already pinned in the LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch.
Engage the actuator rod in the switch.
Position the switch on the column and install the retaining nuts, but do not tighten them.
Move the switch up and down along the column to locate the mid-position of rod lash, and then tighten the retaining nuts.
Remove the locking pin, connect the battery cable, and check for proper start in PARK or NEUTRAL.-Also check to make certain that the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE position.
Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Install steering column shroud.

Its pissible that you need to program the keys to work with the "PATS" security system, go to the following to this section link: fordf150/howto/patskey.

If you only have two keys for your truck, you can just add the new ignition cylinder keys as "spare" keys.

The car will turn over but won`t start but if I turn the key on and jump the starter it starts
Sounds like the ignition switch has gone kaput. The ignition switch come in two pieces, an electrical switch and a mechanical switch.

The switch electrical portion can be replaced separatly from the mechanical portion (tumbler that the key engages). It is not a real difficult repair but requires some mechanical knowlege of how the column is assembled.

This can be verified with electrical test equipment prior to buying a new electrical switch.

How do you go about replacing the ignition switch on a 1988 Ford F150? It is an automatic, 5.0 L motor, electric fuel injection.
Removal & Installation CAUTION Read the air bag service precautions in Section 6 prior to doing work involving an air bag equipped steering column component. Always wear safety glasses when servicing an air bag vehicle and handling the air bag to avoid possible injury.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

How do i remove key lock cylinder on steering column to replace with new one?
Turn ignition key/lock cylinder to the ON position. Insert a thin screwdriver into the slot adjacent to the switch attaching screw boss (right-hand slot). Depress the spring latch located at the bottom of the slot to release the key/lock cylinder. Remove the cylinder.

Removal & Installation

9. Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Install steering column shroud.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
11. Remove the locking pin, connect the battery cable, and verified that the engine will only crank in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also check to make certain the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE positions.

Need to remove ignition switch in my 1986 cutless to put new one in. how do I remove the old one.
Removal & Installation
NOTE This is an extremely difficult and lengthy procedure. You must remove the steering column from the vehicle and disassemble major portions of it. Because the column is collapsible in an accident, it is necessary that it be handled with care to avoid distortion of major parts. It must not be dropped, hammered on or even leaned on, or vitally important parts may deform. The procedure for replacing the ignition switch on tilt type columns is not included here because it involves substantial additional work and the use of several expensive special tools. Unless you are rather experienced, we recommend that the job be left to a competent professional mechanic.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the clamp bolt from the steering coupling at the lower end of the steering column shaft (located near the steering box, under the hood).
  2. Disconnect the shift linkage from the shift tube lever at the lower end of the column.
  3. Remove the steering wheel with a puller, as described above.
  4. Remove the left sound insulator and lower column cover.
  5. Remove the trim cap or lower trim panel from the instrument panel, depending on equipment.
  6. Remove the steering column cover and toe-pan attaching screws. Remove the shift indicator needle from the shift bowl.
  7. Securely support the column in position and remove the two nuts attaching the column to the underside of the instrument panel.
  8. Lower the column carefully, being careful to retain any spacers that may have been used in order. Disconnect the wiring. Then, carefully remove the column from the inside of the vehicle.
  9. Begin disassembling the column, removing the lock plate, canceling cam, and turn signal switch. See the "Turn Signal" Removal & Installation procedure above.
  10. Remove the ignition lock and key warning switch as described below.
  11. Remove the spring and bolt assembly, and the associated thrust washer. Then, remove the rack preload spring, switch rack, and actuator assembly.
  12. Remove the upper shift lever spring. Then, remove the gear shift lever bowl.
  13. Remove the shift bowl shroud and bowl lower bearing.
  14. Unhook and remove the dimmer switch actuating rod. Remove the attaching nut and remove the dimmer switch.
  15. Remove the attaching screw and stud and remove the ignition switch, disassembling the actuating rod from the hole in the sliding actuator.

Replacing the ignition switch

To install:
  1. Move the ignition switch sliding actuator all the way to the left (ACC) position. Then, move it two detents (OFF-UNLOCK) position to the right.
  2. Then, position the actuating rod hole in the sliding actuator, and install the ignition switch, stud, and mounting screw.
  3. Install the dimmer switch with its attaching nut tightened only loosely. Then, depress the switch slightly until you can insert a 3/32 in. drill through the hole in the switch housing and slider. Force the switch upward to remove any lash and tighten the mounting screw with the switch in this position.
  4. Put the shifter in NEUTRAL and install the shift lever.
  5. Install the shift bowl shroud and bowl lower bearing.
  6. Install the rack preload spring, switch rack, and actuator assembly. Install the spring and bolt assembly, and the associated thrust washer.
  7. Install the ignition lock and key warning switch as described below.
  8. Reinstall the column into the vehicle. Make sure when assembling the lower and upper dash covers that they can slide on the column. If the bracket which mounts the column to the dash has been removed, install the bolts in this order:
    • Left rear
    • Left front
    • Right front
    • Right rear
Tighten the bolts just snug to avoid distorting the column.
  1. Install the switch connector to the ignition switch. Then, position the column in the body and support it there. Install the lockwashers and nuts for the coupling and tighten them. Then, loosely assemble the nuts fastening the mounting bracket for the column to the lower side of the instrument panel.
  2. Position the lower cover to the firewall and ensure that the cover is lined up by starting the left lower screw. Then, install and tighten the right lower screw. Then, tighten the left lower screw. Finally, install and tighten the two screws that fit into the top of the cover.
  3. Tighten first the screw for the left side of the cover clamp; then tighten the screw for the right side of the cover clamp. Finally, install and tighten the remaining cover screws.
  4. Finally, tighten the nuts fastening the column to the underside of the dash. Reinstall the bolt for the steering coupling clamp.
  5. Install the lock plate, canceling cam, and turn signal switch. See the "Turn Signal" Removal & Installation procedure in this section.
  6. Connect the wiring.
  7. Securely support the column in position and install the two nuts attaching the column to the underside of the instrument panel.
  8. Install the shift indicator needle from the shift bowl. Install the steering column cover and toe-pan attaching screws.
  9. Install the trim cap or lower trim panel to the instrument panel, depending on equipment.
  10. Install the left sound insulator and lower column cover.
  11. Install the steering wheel, as described above.
  12. Connect the shift linkage to the shift tube lever at the lower end of the column.
  13. Install the clamp bolt to the steering coupling at the lower end of the steering column shaft (located near the steering box, under the hood).
  14. Connect the negative battery cable and check all column operations for free movement and smooth operation.

the ignition switch is an electrical part. The lock cylinder is whre the key goes and it activates the ignition switch. If you pulled the lock cylinder out, you could operate the car with a screwdriver.
Either you have damaged the ignition switch where the lock cylinder goes into it, or the lock cylinder is damaged where it fits into the ignition switch.

this is 96 taurus, don't have 92 sorry

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Ignition Switch Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover (04459).
  1. Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder (11582) to the RUN position.
  1. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  1. Remove the two screws retaining ignition switch (11572).
  1. Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator.
Installation
  1. NOTE: A new replacement ignition switch assembly will be set in the RUN position as received.

    Adjust the ignition switch by sliding the carrier to the ignition switch RUN position.
  1. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder is in the RUN position. The RUN position is achieved by rotating the ignition switch lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from the LOCK position.
  1. Install the ignition switch pin into the actuator. It may be necessary to move the ignition switch slightly back and forth to align the ignition switch mounting holes with the lock cylinder housing threaded holes.
  1. Install retaining screws. Tighten to 5.6-7.9 Nm (50-69 lb-in).
  1. Connect electrical connector to ignition switch.
  1. Connect battery ground cable. Check ignition switch for proper function, including START and ACC positions. Also, make certain that the column is in the LOCK position.
  1. Install lower instrument panel steering column cover with screws.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Ignition Switch The ignition switch (11572), which is mounted on the steering actuator housing (3F723), operates in the following manner:
  • The ignition switch is cycled through rotation of the ignition switch lock cylinder (11582) through a pin which is part of the ignition switch.
  • The ignition switch lock cylinder also controls the mechanism which provides a positive lock for the transaxle linkage and the steering system.
  • The locking mechanism is located in the steering column housing.
The ignition switch lock cylinder positions are:
  • ACC
  • LOCK
  • OFF
  • RUN
  • START
The key can be removed from the ignition switch lock cylinder with the column-shift transaxle only when the shift lever is in PARK position and the key is in LOCK position.
  • The ACC position operates while the steering and transaxle remain locked.
  • The engine shuts off when the key is turned to the OFF position without locking the steering or transaxle.
Blade Type
The ignition switch has blade-type terminals that engage with one multiple connector. The multiple connector is secured to the ignition switch by an integral connector fastener.

Steering column
  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  3. Unbolt the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
  4. Disconnect the shift linkage rod(s) from the column.
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
If you have a tilt column, the steering wheel MUST be in the full UP position when it is removed.
  1. Remove the floor cover screws at the base of the column.
  2. Remove the steering column shroud by place the bottom screw in the No.1 position and pulling the shroud up and away from the column.
  3. On automatics, remove the shift indicator cable.
  4. Remove the instrument panel column opening cover.
  5. Remove the bolts securing the column support bracket to the pedal support bracket.
  6. Disconnect the turn signal/hazard warning harness and the ignition switch harness.
  7. Lift the column from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the column support bracket
To install:
  1. Install the column support bracket making sure that the wiring is outboard of the column. Torque the nuts to the specifications shown in the Torque Chart at the end of this Section.
  2. Start the floor cover clamp bolt and press the plate until the clamp flats touch the stops on the column outer tube.
  3. Install the column through the floor opening.
  4. Connect the turn signal/hazard warning and ignition harnesses.
  5. Raise the column and install the 2 support bolts.
  6. Tighten the floor cover bolts to the specifications shown in the Torque Chart at the end of this Section.
  7. Torque the support bracket bolts to the specifications shown in the Torque Chart at the end of this Section.
  8. Torque the cover plate clamp bolt to the specifications shown in the Torque Chart at the end of this Section.
  9. Install and adjust the shift indicator cable, on automatics.
  10. Install the instrument panel column opening cover.
  11. Install the column shroud.
  12. Torque the shroud bottom screw to 15 inch lbs.
  13. Connect the shifter rod(s).
  14. Connect the intermediate shaft. Torque the bolt to the specifications shown in the Torque Chart at the end of this Section.
