Question about 1999 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

I have a 99 corvette and I need the ABS, Traction system and Active handling serviced. Warning light for these things are coming on and staying on. What can be the problem? I think it's just the sensor that's off. Is anyone else having this problem? How much should it cost to fix the problem? Also the car was in a auto accident a long time ago, could this be affecting it now?

ABS and Traction Control alert light stays on

Today, most new vehicles come with either an ABS or a traction control system. A problem in the ABS or traction control system is usually indicated by a warning light. When the ABS warning light is on, it means that the ABS has been shut down because of a mechanical or electrical failure.

I keep getting a message service stabilitrak

StabiliTrak Indicator Light: If the warning light does not come on then, have it fixed so it will be ready to warn you if there is a problem. If it stays on, or comes on when you are driving, there may be a problem with your StabiliTrak system and your vehicle may need service. When this warning light is on, the system is off and will not limit wheel spin. Adjust your driving accordingly.

This light will also flash when the StabiliTrak system is active. If the StabiliTrak system warning light comes on and stays on for an extended period of time when the system is turned on, your vehicle needs service.

The traction control part of StabiliTrak can be turned off by pressing and releasing the StabiliTrak button if both systems (traction control and StabiliTrak) were previously on. To disable both traction control and StabiliTrak, press and hold the button for five seconds.

Traction control and StabiliTrak can be turned on by pressing and releasing the StabiliTrak button if not automatically shut off for any other reason.

When the TCS or StabiliTrak system is turned off, the StabiliTrak light and the appropriate TCS off or StabiliTrak off message will be displayed on the DIC to warn the driver. Your vehicle will still have brake-traction control when traction control is off, but will not be able to use the engine speed management system.

If the StabiliTrak and/or Traction Control are not operating properly, I encourage you to take your vehicle in for inspection. A certified technician will be able to offer a more accurate diagnosis.

1999 Corvette abs lights & active handling goes off after starting car off and on two or three times then styas off

Your ABS module has failed. The ABS module is used as part of the Active Handling system, so it's also possible that the connector has either come disconnected or corroded. Try some WD-40 on the pins.

My 99 grand am anti break and traction warning lights come on for no reason and kicks off my cruise...doesn't matter if I have traction or not...any ideas?

Yes . Most likely one or more of the wheel speed sensors is faulty and needs to be replaced. If these are faulty the ABS will not work and you will get the ABS warning. These should be checked first.
Then the anti lock braking system pump should be checked to ensure it is operating. If it is not you will get the ABS warning.

MESSAGE CENTRE TC

TC = Traction Active

If your vehicle is equipped with the Traction Control system, this message will stay on a few seconds after the traction system stops limiting wheel spin.

This message will appear when the traction control system is limiting wheel spin. Keep in mind that when the warning lights turn on, a fault code is stored in the ABS control module (in this case). Retrieving, diagnosing, and repairing any ABS system faults will be necessary to keep the light off. A common fault with ABS systems are the wheel speed sensors, stored codes may confirm this.

Hope this helps.

Left the keys in the ignition adn had AAA jump it. Now the T/C with a slash through it came on and the light that says low engine power. The car starts really rough and has no power when u drive it. WHats...

T/C light = Traction Control

Could be something going on with a wheel speed sensor. You'll have to have the ABS/TCS controller scanned for any stored trouble codes to see why the controller is turning on the light. The code(s) might help you to determine what part of the system is faulting. You'll have to take it to a shop that has a high end scan tool.

If the TC light is on, chances are there is a trouble code set and stored in the computer. You need to determine what the code is. If you take the car to a nationally recognized parts store, most will scan the computer for free, so there is no money out of pocket for you.

Actron also makes a ABS code checker called BrakeScan. Don't know how good it is, but it might be good for a DIY person.

TC Explanation:

If your vehicle is equipped with the Enhanced Traction System (ETS), this warning light should come on briefly as you start the engine. If the warning light does not come on, then have it fixed so it will be ready to warn you if there is a problem.
If the warning light stays on, or comes on when you are driving, there may be a problem with your Enhanced Traction System and your vehicle may need service. When this warning light is on, the system will not limit wheel spin. Adjust your driving accordingly.
The Enhanced Traction System warning light may come on for the following reasons:
If you turn the system off by moving the shift lever to FIRST (1), the warning light will come on and stay on. To turn the system back on, move the shift lever back to a position other than FIRST (1). The warning light should go off. The warning light will come on when you set your parking brake with the engine running, and it will stay on if your parking brake does not release fully. If the transaxle shift lever is in any position other than FIRST (1) and the warning light stays on after your parking brake is fully released, it means there is a problem with the system. If the traction control system is affected by an engine-related problem, the system will turn off and the warning light will come on. If the Enhanced Traction System warning light comes on and stays on for an extended period of time when the transaxle shift lever is in any position other than FIRST (1), your vehicle needs service.

What would cause traction active light come on

i have had this problem since about 6 months after i bought my 2001 impala. the problem is in the hubs. the wireing that runs throw them rubs together and eventually shorts the traction and abs. easy solution to fix it though. get into the hubs and wrap the wires. otherwise take the car in and explain the problem to them and exactly what you need done. 9-10 times they won't fix the problem unless you tell them what you want done. it is really simple and going to the dealer should only cost you about 100 to fix.

Service Active Handling, ABS and Traction Control Lights on

I have had exactly the same problem on and off for 3 years now - and just solved it last week thanks to another computer site. Remove and disassemble both grounds from the top of both the left and right frame rails adjacent to the front corners of the engine block. Completely clean the green corrosion from the internal parts with fine sandpaper and add dielectric grease then re-assemble. Clean the mounting bolt and frame hole while you're at it. Sounds time consuming and difficult, but it ain't. No more than 45 minutes combined. I am a technical airhead so if I can do it so can you. What clued me in was the problem always occurred around wet or humid weather. Also, the clock would always lose time overnite. That has ceased also. Good luck. Anyone know why my left headlite, when deployed, vibrates and shimmys??? Sully ptsully@roadrunner.com
