Intermittenly will not crank. I can hear the fuel pump. The battery is good. I turn the key and I hear the drone of the fuel then I engage the ignition to start position and nothing no sound no starter clinking no cranking sounds what so ever. Happens very infrequently at this point. Any suggestions?

It is a loose ground to the starter. look for a ground to the bell housing. chances are it's loose this is the ground for the solenoid on the starter. I had the same problem with my vehicle . please rate this thanks

Are you saying it cranks good or won't start? If so, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse.
With engine cranking or running, I can't hear the fuel pump. The initial prime may turn it on for a second or so.
The battery connections are all good, both ends? Battery has a full charge? Some vehicles when battery voltage is lost, some modules may have to be reprogrammed. I can't help you with that? You may need a manufacturer specific scanner that can communicate with whatever module.
One way to tell if computer is awake, turn on the key, Hopefully any sensor that uses a ref voltage, it goes hot with key on, so check ref voltage.
if it has spark and only tries to sart when you prime then it is a fuel problem. pull the fuel hose where it connects to the injectors and run it into a container then turn on the key and see of fuel runs into the container, if not you need a fuel pump or filter. careful not to spill fuel all over the place. have someone turn on the key while you watch if fuel comes out so they can turn key off right away and not burn your stuff down.
the autoshutoff relay may be out also..it controls both the ignition and fuel pump thru the key switch.. try taking the negative battery cable off with the key on...kills all the circuits..then after turning the key off..reconnect the cable and turn the key to the run position..DO NOT START..listen for the fuel pump to buzz 2-3 seconds..some dash indicators will go out..then try to start but only if you hear the pump buzz..if it does not buzz, be looking at that relay..
a oil gauge reading maybe delayed until car starts and builds good oil press.Did you check for spark was car running good before this happened? Do you have a rpm reading when cranking car?
I hope this helps? Are you missing anything else? Engine cranking you have spark at the plugs and fuel injector pulse? Any applicable trouble codes? Battery has a full charge? See load side of mfi relay, that line with arrow head, with key on, good voltage at upper wire? If so, if you use a jumper wire between proper wire colors, the pump should run.
I'D START BY CHECKING FOR ANY VACCUM LEAKS NEAR AND ABOUT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. IF IN FACT YOU DO HAVE AN 88 IT SHOULDNT BE CARBUREATED IT SHOULD BE FUEL INJECTED. IF SO YOU NEED MORE THAN 45PSI OF FUEL PRESSURE TO MAKE IT RUN RIGHT. TURN ON THE KEY BUT DO NOT START THE ENGINE. LISTEN AND SEE IF YOU CAN HEAR THE FUEL PUMP CHARGE THE SYSTEM, SHOULD BE A LIGHT HISSING SOUND. IF SO START THE ENGINE. WHEN IT SHUTS OFF THEN TURN OFF THE KEY AND REPEAT THIS PROCESS AGAIN, IF YOU CANT HEAR THE NOISE AND IT WILL NOT CRANK THEN EITHER YOU MAY HAVE A FAULTY FUEL PUMP THAT IS ONLY WORKING INTERMITTENLY DUE TO BAD PUMP BRUSHES (REPLACE FUEL PUMP) OR YOU HAVE A BAD FUEL PUMP RELAY.
