You said the choke sticks

I would just rebuild the carb & use a new float

1986 chevette has alot of knocking coming from the engine.Lifters have been adjusted, but problem still persists, what else could it be?

Lifters tick. Rod bearings knock(typically the harder you mash the gas, the louder the knock). poor quality gas can do it if you need a tune-up.

Starting my truck

when you pump the gas pedal can you see fuel spray into the carb .sounds like your pump squirter isnt squirting the gas in to start on a cold start similar to the choke coming on ... or your choke isnt coming on ..try rebuilding the carb or a replacement carb if you can.
