What make , model an year vehicle ? What do you mean ? The red brake light symbol is lit on the dash or you have a message on the DIC - driver information center saying parking brake fault ! If the light that comes on when you set the parking brake is what your talking about ., This light also comes on when the brake master cylinder is low on brake fluid ! Could need brakes or have a leak in the hydraulic system. The light could also be on at the same time as the ABS light ,which could be a whole other problem .
I assum you mean the brake light on the dash. That light will come on if the park brake is set even if its partly set. It will also come on if the brake fluid is low. If the brake fluid is low check for leaks or low brake pads but you have to find out why the brake fluid is low.
You may just need to fill the brake resorvoir with brake fluid, when you are NOT pressing the pedal the fluid in the resovoir is low and the light comes on.
When you DO press the brake pedal you are forcing brake fluid level to go higher and this tells the sensor in the resovoir that the resovoir is full.
hi from uk if as you say the brake fluid level is slightly above min ? then this is most probably the reason the warning light is on this light is also linked to both park brake when on and a visual warning via a sensor on the reservoir that brake fluid is low top reservoir up ? light should/will go off however! fluid level drops for two reasons = 1 fluid leak on b/system 2 or in your case the fluid level has dropped by displacement from reservoir to brake calipers/cylinders as the brake pads and/or shoes wear down to minimum safe thickness ? and if your car has brake pads wear indicators fitted to pads these sensors will put light on SO may i suggest you check your brake pads/shoes ASAP because if pads/shoes are very low ? you may not only damage the more expensive disc/rotors but pads may/will burn up resulting in brake failure with obvious results ? hope you heed this advice? it is for your safety and other drivers best wishes
Parking Brake Console Light Stays On
The light is on because the brake fluid is low. The sensor in the brake fluid reservoir is signaling low fluid. This may be because leaking or the brake pads/shoes are worn down, so check to see if they needs replacement. In the mean time you can add brake fluid.
The Parking brake switch is activated by the brake handle. If you use a flashlight you may be able to see it next to the handle.
The parking brake and the low brake fluid use the same light. If it
comes on during acceleration, your brake fluid level is low and you
need to add some brake fluid or replace your pads. The brake fluid gets
low as the pads wear as the whole system is hydraulic. Another
possibility is a brake fluid leak. As you accelerate, the fluid gets
pushed back causing the low brake fluid light to turn on.
