How To Check & Reset Your 2002-2006 Nissan Altima Service Engine Soon (SES) Light

The following directions will help you decode your 2002-2006 Nissan Altima's Service Engine Soon (SES) light and reset it.

Obtain The Trouble Code

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and wait three seconds.
  2. Put the accelerator pedal to the floor and release it five times in less than five seconds.
  3. Wait exactly seven seconds. Put the accelerator pedal to the floor for ten seconds until the SES light flashes.
  4. Release the accelerator pedal and start counting flashes to obtain the four-digit trouble code.
  • Long flashes (0.6 seconds) indicate the first digit of the code; count the blinks one through nine and write down the first digit. (Ten blinks indicates a zero.)
  • The next three digits blink faster (0.3 second) and have a 1 second pause between digits.
  • The ECM code repeats until you turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  • You can look up the trouble codes in the Service Manual.
  • If you get four blinks of ten, or 0000, the ECM indicates no malfunction.

Clear The Trouble Code
  1. Clear the code and the SES light by holding the accelerator pedal down to the floor for 10 seconds or more while the SES light is blinking.
  2. When the pedal is released, the ECM will erase the trouble code(s).

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5 S 4 cylinder - went to get gas (just a bit, did not fill up) on Christmas and soon afterward the 'service engine soon' light came on. Called the Nissan dealer

When last did you service the vehicle ?
did they use the proper fuel ?

Chances are the service time is near where you will need to do a basic service, Plug , plug wires, filters etc. And reset the counter.
the fuel ting is just a coincidence.

I have the "Service Engine Soon" (SES) appearing

IF you are absolutely certain YOU know why the light is on ... and there is no other reason ... you can probably have this code cleared by someone with a SCAN tool ... expect to pay for the service ... and probably pay near what it will cost to repair the problem. When the mechanic clears the code, he or she will have to get enough money to "recover" when you come back in a few weeks and say HE or she DID IT AND NOW MY CAR WILL NOT WORK.

Please don't kill the messenger ... Thank you

service engine soon 2006 nisson altima, how can i reset

This light indicates a fault. Recommend you have the car scanned. A scanner can reset the light, but first get the trouble codes to see what might be wrong with the car.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5932051-check_engine_light_check and let me know if you have questions.

Reset SES light on Murano.....

I had a similar problem. I took it to a near by auto zone and asked them if they could hook up their scanner to the computer and clear the ses light. The light was reset and that fixed the problem. You might want to try this since they do it for free. Hope this helps.

MAINTENANCE REPAIR ON HIGH MILEAGE NISSAN ALTIMA

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. Some problems are minor, but if not addressed it could become major. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on.

Please let me know if this information is helpful. Positive feedback is appreciated. Thank You!
