Drive Axle Replacement (Re-installation)

This is for the 93 Toyota Corolla _ however, applies to (nearly) all front wheel drive (all wheel drive) vehicles.

If you bought new drive axles,(or are re-installing drive axles) they may not have given you the right ones (too short) - or, you have not pushed the axle(s) into the transmission all the way. There is a ring that pops into place. You will feel this as it is put into place.

Make sure that you are pushing the drive axle in as far as it will go into the tranny - and when putting the other end in the hub assembly - make sure it is lining up (there should be grooves on the axle that MUST lign up with the grooves on the inner portion of the hub assembly.

After pushing the drive axle into the transmission you should not be able to pull it out by hand at all (without effort).

Every car on the road has a differential. It is always located where the 2 drive axles are on the vehicle. On a front wheel drive it is connected to the transmission and engine where the drive axles come out . It's usually in the same case as the transmission. On a rear wheel drive it is in the back axle. Hope this helps.

Trying to replace the wheel bearings, cv joints, etc on a 96 toyota corolla. Came apart with no issues, however, when putting it back together, every time I torque the axle nut, it pulls the axle shaft out of the trans. Any ideas?

If you bought new drive axles, they may not have given you the right ones (too short) - they did this to me with my 93 Subi - (I own a 93 Toyota Corolla DX).

Make sure that you are pushing the drive axle in as far as it will go into the tranny - and when putting the other end in the hub assembly - make sure it is lining up (there should be grooves on the axle that MUST lign up with the grooves on the inner portion of the hub assembly.

After pushing the drive axle into the driveline you should not be able to pull it out by hand at all (without effort).

1998 TOYOTA CORROLA. front end vibration at 50 mph on acceleration only. I grabbed hold of the drive axle just behind the cv boot near the tire. I can move it in and out a bit. oN TWO OTHER COROLLAS i HAVE I CAN'T MOVE THE AXLE. ANY SUGGESTIONS ?DO THE AXLES HAVE TO BE REPLACED YOU THINK?

I would definitely stay with tire balancing first. So much less expensive. Axle trouble is usually accompanied by noise which comes and goes with turning the wheel or braking.

Remove wheel, brake cliper, cliper mounting bracket, brake pads and rotor.
Remove tie rod end and strut from spindle,
Remove large drive axle nut from center of hub by removing cotter pin and nut cover
Remove the ball joints 2 nuts and 1 bolt
Pull assy. lose from drive axle.
Take complete Hub assy with new bearing to an automotive machine shop and have them disassemble hub and replace bearing.
Reverse steps to reinstall
