Tip & How-To about 1990 Plymouth Acclaim
There are several causes for what I have found to be a common problem with these vehicles. That problem is a speedometer that bounces around and can quit working altogether.
In my case the issue was at first a wire that had been stuck to the engine block and started to short, I simply zip tied the wire onto something that was not metal and did not generate heat. The next time this happened I had to replace the part that the wire ran to. I will call this a speed sensor.
The speed sensor is very easy to replace and requires only about twenty minutes if you take your time. Remove the air cleaner first. It's not actually in the way and the speed sensor can be removed with it in place but you will have much more room to work with if you take it off. There should be two bolts holding the speed sensor in, undo those and pull it out. Detach it from the wires attach the new speed sensor and re-install. Now your cruise control should work again without making the car buck and kick the whole way.
