This car has issues. Where in the country do you live? What's the vehicle mileage? Most likely you'd use 5w30 but this can change based on climate and mileage. As for the exhaust problem, need to know where it's split. These cars will go through exhaust systems, and a car of this vintage may need a catalytic converter/ front pipe converter or worse yet a pre-cat which these older cars had. Black smoke could indicate partially clogged cats or other fuel issues. Time to get the car in for service or look for a new vehicle. The necessary repairs may not be warranted unless the car is in pristine low mileage condition.

Since you worked on it .. best possiibilty is that you did not reassembel correctly.. Go back over everything you did.. and look for a miisplaced wire, blown fuses, or some other problrm you missed.and if yyou do not find it look again..

run fault codes as the miss may be injector problems and not plugs.

Your year model used freon which can still be obtained thru a licensed AC tech. The older freon gas has been banned from further production and is very expensive. Check with a local repairman and see if they can re-claim the freon , clean your system, install necessary filters and change-over equipment and install a later approved and cheaper refrigerant. !25K on a 1990 Camry is just about broke -in and ready to drive. They are some of the best engineered vehicles I have ever worked on. They also seldom need repairs.......especially the 4-Cyl models. Best Wishes

Because of lack of information (data) about your inspection, it is hard to tell where the failure is. For more information about changing catalytic converter. The price can be 10 times different. The highest quota I got was over $1400 (the golden smog station), the lowest was below $200 (found by state division where I asked for compensation due to old car -- since I cannot go there directly, I paid $325 fro an agent to do it). Dealer was asking for $700. After changed a home genie catalytic converter, which worked better then the original manufactured till car is dead in another 10 years, I brought it back to the golden smog station for free re-test. The technician did not believe that is a new, and inspected to verify that is true. This homegenie catalytic converter passed a number of smog tests till car is dead after another 10 years. BTW, the original manufactured catalytic converter failed on the very first smog check at year 6 or 7 after can was bought, so it is possible you had a failure catalytic converter, but inspection result may tell.

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The hose attaches to it.

Depending on the year. I.e. 89-91 camry, all have a yellow god fuse in the driver side of the trunk space behind liner.it is about 2''*3" cant miss it, being only yellow part.
