Hi, i have a 1988 toyota conquest. the oil light
If oil level is OK, then it is possible that the warning light pressure switch which is screwed into the engine oil pressure system is faulty and setting off light and needs replacing. There could even be oil leaking out of the switch. The switch is usually located near the oil filter and will have a wire connected to it.
If after replacing switch and light still comes on, check to make sure wire is not making contact with the engine because of cracked insulation or it could also mean badly worn engine bearings. It is unlikely to be the oil pump as these hardly ever fail.

We just bought an 88 toyota corolla for our son.
You may have trans problems. The guy that sold you the car knew it. It will cost more than the car is worth if the trans is bad. I wouild call the person you bought it from and explain it has trans problems and what the best course of action is.
Bucking when driving changed the spark plugs and
usually the coil, which is sometimes delivering a good spark.....but most of the time it is not...pull the bigwire from the coil at the distributer end, place it close to the eng block or other ground and check for spark....should be bright blue, anything towards a yellow or orange is not good. DON'T TOUCH the grounded coil wire, it'll knock you for a loop......hope this helps
1988 toyota corolla wont hold a charge new battery
take a volt meter and have it set to the dc mode
probe the meter red on positive and black on negative to the battery with the engine running.
you should get a reading of 13.5 volts.
if not the altenator is bad
next you can do this test which is easy to do.
sway the two probes around, red on black and black to red
if a reading shows up the diode in the altenator is bad as well
the diode is to keep the currebt going one way to charge the battery
if flow in reverse no charge will be made to the battery
Excessive smoke in the tail pipe
1988, time to send it to the wrecker... or put in a crate motor.
how much oil is it burning between oil changes?
only a few ways oil gets burnt in the exhaust.
1) worn out rings - overhaul (running thick oil might help a little)
2) worn out valve guides - overhaul (running thick oil might help a little)
3) blow by is forcing it into the PCV system - overhaul
4) crack somewhere between the oil gallery and the intake... this usally run really bad though...
yep kinda sums it up.... overhaul (replace or wrecker)
Peace
