1997 chevy malibu anti theft system how do I fix
The late-90's GM Passlock system (e.g. 1997 Malibu, Regal, Impala, etc.) has a part around the ignition tumbler that goes bad and no longer reliably detects the valid key. In that situation, the "Theft System" light will slowly flash and the carburetor is cut off so the engine won't start. The time-out on the system is 10 minutes - you don't have to do anything, you don't have to disconnect the battery, the key can be out of the ignition -- it's just a time delay. After 10 minutes, the light goes out and you can try again (but if the key is again not detected, the light will start flashing again and you have to wait another 10 minutes)
Someone else, who had this problem, told me to remove all other keys from my keyring. The weight of the other keys pulls on the ignition key causing the key to be unreadable. It has been 7 weeks since I have been doing this and have not had a problem

My 1997 Jeep Cherokee lost its power steering last
I had the same problem some time ago, spinning the pump does not check it under pressure, suggest you either get a new pump or a replacement from a Breakers, easy to fit and also replace the belt, smoke was probably the belt catching on its track.

check the battery for full charge, you should have a minimum of 12.4 volts, once its charged ( I'd have a parts store do a LOAD test on it ) start the vehicle, and check the posts again, it should be giving you a reading of 13.5 to 14.5 volts,, if not, and you've cleaned all the contacts you have a bad alternator

1997 jeep cheorkee stuck in defrost
On this year vehicle the flapper should be vacuum controlled. You may want to look at the vacuum lines
going to and from the vacuum canister in the engine compartment. If it will change from floor to dash but not defrost
then you may have a failed vacuum line or diaphragm in the dash from the selector.

From what you posted,it may be a few different problems.BUT.The 1st thing I would look at is the cat/converter may be blocked.Hey.It may not be.But look at that before you spend any money on other stuff.I just thought. How is your air filter.Take it out and take the car for a short run and see how it goes. This may show what is wrong.Hope this helps

Have it checked with a computer diagnostics. It sounds like it could be a bad sensor, quite possibly your oxygen sensor. A bad sensor could cause the computer to think your engine needs more fuel.

- Installation is the reverse of removal.

The reason the estimates are so high is because of labor costs. The gasket kits are reasonable but even the shop has to mark up the parts my guess on mark up is 20-40 percent we'll say 150 to make the numbers easy to make a profit but the majority of your costs are labor. The head after it is removed has to go to a machine shop to be milled and magnafluxed to check for leaks.
