What can cause an 88 xj6 power steering pump to
I have had to replace the high pressure lines on a regular basis but only had to replace two pumps. This pump is a gear driven unit off the rear of the distributor housing. Each pump had a broken coupler where it engaged the gear. The pump itself is not servicable. One of the pumps had also damaged the drive gear which caused a lot of work. Both pumps had siezed from overheating from excess friction between the internal plates that help it build pressure. That's what the dealer told me when I had to buy a new pump assembly. Hope this helps.

Abs light is on and brake pedal is very hard
If you open the hood and look to the right front, you will see a resevoir. If this resevoir is dry due to a leak, it will not help assist to apply the brakes. This is very dangerous due to the weight of the vehicle. The resevoir should be green and tell you what fluid to use. This is very critical. the assist for the brakes on these models is hydraulic.
When i try to start
If you get a single click each time you try to start and it's from the front of the car, you most likely have a failed starter motor solenoid. If left for a while, the solenoid contact points can corrode and fail to pass enough current to get the starter motor to engage and then turn. The fix is to replace the starter, but you can often get going temporarily by giving the solenoid a sharp tap with a hammer... if you can get to it! A long metal rod (or screwdriver) placed against the side of the solenoid and then given a sharp tap on the end can relay the hammer effect down to where it needs to go.
If you have multiple clicks from the solenoid with a single turn of the key, then you most likely have a faulty ignition switch.
If you get multiple clicks coming from the rear of the car, you have a different problem altogether and should start by checking the fuel pump and then work forwards through the fuel system.
