OVERHEATS AFTER THERMOSTAT REMOVED

take fan belt off so water pump does not turn. take thermostat housing off. make sure water level is close to top of thermostat housing (inside) start it, look for air bubbles... If you get them it is due to leaking headgasket, this will be the cause of your overheating and I suspect it's pushing water out too... Just a guess with the limited details.

Why wont my vehicle start.

For an engine to start it needs the correct amount of fuel delivered into each cylinder in the correct form to be compressed and then ignited at the correct time by a spark. Fuel, compression and spark. When an engine will not start one of those requirements is missing and assuming the cranking speed is sufficient, which is a requirement under the general heading of "compression", a diagnostic process will need to be gone through which typically will begin by ensuring there is a good spark available at the spark plug and then move on to the fuel system. Because car theft became a national sport in many parts of the world in the late 1980's and early 1990's, by the mid 90's many manufacturers were fitting immobiliser systems as standard and so when an engine refuses to start these also become part of the diagnostic process and are often to blame.

Replace a starter on a 1998 landrover discovery

Before you do anything expensive, check the earth with a multimeter and replace the earth strap if necessary. If still no good, get under the vehicle and thump the starter solenoid with a hammer - they frequently corrode inside, If the starter needs to be replaced, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, then undo the two bolts holding the unit to the engine and withdraw it towards the front of the vehicle

My landrover wont move when i put it in gear

Most likely fault is you have sheared off the gbox input shaft. You don't say if its manual or auto? Have you checked to see if the hi lo shift is properly set and hasn't jumped the transfer box to neutral. Get a LR specialist to look at it. You don't say where you are but if in the UK there are loads of specialists, get a magazine or search the web.

Gas gauge not working

The petrol gauge is a voltmeter. Therefore check the continuity of the wire from the sender unit first .Next if this is fine take the sender unit out unplug then check it is not jammed .Next put an ohm meter across the two terminals you should see a change on the readings as you move the float. Do you have 12v at positive to earth from the live wire ? if not check fuse and trace power..Last thing then (and this is the most difficult) get the gauge out and put 6v on the positive terminal and the other to earth. This should move the meter to around half . This should locate the fault ,bet it is the sender unit in the tank.
