What does the "check engine" light mean and require doing?
The "Check Engine" light indicates the the car's onboard diagnostic (OBD) computer has detected a fault or failure in one or more of the components in the system.
These are usually emissions related and do not affect the drive-ability of the car - at least initially. Ignoring the notice can affect drive-ability and safety of the vehicle and many times can turn a relatively inexpensive repair into something more significant.
The fault is decoded with a special tool called a "code scanner" that plugs into the vehicle OBD port under the dashboard. It will retrieve the fault code and will need to be interpreted. Many auto parts stores will do this for you free of charge (while many garages will charge for the service). Some faults reveal plainly what the trouble is - while others point to a problem(s) that can have dozens of causes that can be very difficult to narrow down. Cases like this is where a trusted mechanic can be your friend.
The first step is to get the fault scanned and interpreted. You can use google to search the code number or result. Locate other owners online to see if they've had similar problems and what they did to resolve it. Failing that, find that trusted mechanic and get it fixed.
