2003 XKR dashboard illumination goes off when main lights switched on or if dash lights do stay on after starting they go off when main beam is operated.

is this car the all alluminium xk model ? if so it sounds like a bad earth the earth studs are all bonded to the body and are prone to detatching from the body and causing all strange probs. the favorite ones are both front behind the wheel arch liners, if its the older xk still sounds like a bad earth poss behind the headlamps. the only other probs i had was wires coming detatched/poor connection from the column switch, hope this helps

Can I drive my car Safely with :ASC Trac not available / Trac not available

you can safely drive with this light on. it will be like driving a car without traction control. some also shut off the ABS system(anti-lock brakes) but again its like driving without this system like cars use to be before all this new options came out.

Valet key is green. Does that mean the emblem or the case. I have black cases with green emblem one is silver the other is gold?

the valet key has a green housing and should only fit the door lock and ignition lock, not the boot or glove box.

Fail safe engine mode

you will need to get the fault codes out of the engine control module to help sort this one tipical causes are air leaks or throttle body problems.

you could have plugged the fuel filter by running it empty. Check that first.

Check engine with error codes P1111 and P0455

The Code 455 is showing the large leak in the Evaporative system (gascap) and the Code 1111 shows there are no defects. You can get these codes wiped off with a scanner free at Autozone, Oreilys, or Advance. They may clear by themselves after 35 startups. It would just appear to be a latent record of the old condition before and after you tightened the gascap.

DTC P1642 is for a loss in CAN communication. You will need to read the codes from the other modules to see which one is the culprit. From your description is does sound like the CAN network went down. It may be a problem with the inertia switch. It may have partially tripped causing this problem.

See your owner manual for the location of your inertia fuel cutoff switch. It cuts off power to the fuel pump in an accident.

CAN is the communication network where all teh computers in your car talk to one another. There appears to be a problem intermittently here.
