the book shows 2 ways
the FSM
1/2in play at pedal or 1/8 " inch at bell lever.
most of these cars the cable is long gone bad inside.
and jams, and in the end, you brake the pedal, arm, or spine or worse.
its all there, play, pedal height,
and links to real FSM pages.

the FSM is free
go here
http://www.fixkick.com/
the control is cable drive, why remove that? then each cable end must be removed, and is tedious. (clamps, and other issues)
or do you mean the control switch? set.?
posting the symptom first, puts us on the same page,
so can advise a best path.
see fans switch out here , steps.

it come apart the cable, from bottom out.
pull it and lube it.

how to step by step
rmove the bottom cable ring holder, (unscrews)
the cable slides out.
lube it. lightly
put it back.
at the last inch you will have to spin the cable to get the sqaured
ends to dog in to the speedo head.

engaging?
you meant dis-engage im sure.
pedal up is engaged,
pedal at floor dis-engages it.
my guess, is the clutch drags unless i push the clutch pedal 100%
to the floor.
1: bad cable is 90% cause. non last this long.
2: no free play is way too loose.
3: broken lever on the pedal top. caused by #1

all fail modes covered here.

You have probably torched the catalytic converter (they actually melt and become plugged up). No air flow now. Best way to check is pull the pre/foward 02 sensor. This will give breathing room for the engine. Also take out the air filter for good measure. Just remember, a one inch hole( the size of the 02 sensor, doesn't make up for the 2 inch hole for the exhaust). You will still have drivability problems. This may solve your problems, but there also could be more. Like , why did it melt to begin with?
