always is better to replace used or opened with new one, but that is really not needed in every case, if is damaged then sure i will recommend. and good to know from economical side,there is also liquid gasket which sometimes are more expensive but are handy,and good for all hard to find gaskets.

being an englishman of old school type and this is a vehicle made in my ex homeland i love to help but i can honestly say i do not have much experiance of this vehicle but if its just a transfer housing and a cover plate is leaking then try tightening it up a bit first and see what happens but if that doesnt work then take a few pics and post a reply and i will look at the pics and try to think of whats a possibility as some housing covers can hold a bearing and if you take it off you can come a cropper as it all falls apart .

If you start it, and drop it into 1 does it move? If so, sounds like the sprag clutch (iirc) has gone - this is the clutch that allows you to freewheel at lights and what not. Common problem on the Auto gearboxes. Will need a rebuild I'm afraid.
