Question edited for clarity. Question moved to model category. You have a leak, you just need to find it. Look for leaks in the hoses. Do a pressure test. The most common reasons a Volvo S40 has a coolant leak are loose hose connections, a broken radiator, or a failed water pump.

Have you replaced the filter and fluid every two years or 24K miles? Try fresh filter and fluid as a cheap possible fix.

CHECK YOUR RESERVOIRS THE FLUID HAS TO BE LOWERING THE LEVEL AT THE SOURCE RESERVOIR

one unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well

the variable timing wheel should be on the inlet cam. the timing marks should align on cams upper of rear inner belt cover the crank upper of oil pump housing

I WORK ON VOLVO TRUCKS BUT I HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE THINGS WORK, I WOULD REPLACE THE CRANK AND CAM SPEED SENSORS.

If it's not on the front pulley,check the fly wheel housing ,could be a hole you shine a torch into.
