This has been happening to my car as well. It typically happens when your oxygen sensors start to wear out. Mine does it once in a while and I have the local auto store reset it. Go to your nearest auto store and have them tell you what code it is and ask them to reset the OBD so the light goes out. If the light comes on right away and the code has to do with your oxygen sensors, have them replaced. There are three, two are easy to replace, one takes some effort as it is in a tough to get to spot. The dealer will charge you a fortune to replace them so do it yourself or through a local mechanic. It is a very simple task other then the access.

If you disconnect the battery to reset the engine light, make sure you have the code to reset the anti theft on the radio, otherwise your radio will not work

99 Camry, P0441 & P0446 codes

I purchased a CanOBD2 code reader to see what the codes are so I can look into repairing the problem myself. The gas mileage may be off a bit but the car otherwise starts, runs, and drives normally at all speeds and under all conditions. The gas cap used to have pressure but now it doesn't, and I always make sure the cap is sealed properly (three ''clicks''). My friend used to drive it and he had a tendency to overfill the tank so it may have triggered the codes. The gas cap is the stock Toyota unit and I've never had it pressure tested. I don't want to replace it unless it's defective.

Since only 441 and 446 codes are present I'm thinking there's a bad valve/switch in the evap canister but wanted to check here first. How much of a job is it to repair this problem? I don't have a service manual so perhaps someone could post a diagram or direct me to a site where I could purchase a manual on the cheap since my budget is really tight right now.

Thanks sincerely for your help. :)

Hi Toyota Ed, Could you please send me the solution for the p0446 code issue on a 99 es300?

A. Diagnostics for PO441:

1. Remove Vacuum Hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister and discard.
2. If there is a metal vapor pipe between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister, clean inside of vapor
pipe
3. Replace EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister assembly with new parts.
4. Install new vacuum hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister.

B. Diagnostics for P0446:

1. Inspect vacuum hoses and pipes between EVAP (Purge) VSV and Charcoal Canister for leaks.
2. Replace Vapor Pressure VSV and Canister.
NOTE :When performing diagnostics for an occurrence of a MIL "ON" condition, Diagnostic
Trouble Code (DTC) P0441 may be result of debris in Evaporative Emission Control System. This
may cause blockage of a vapor line, or a stuck VSV, as described in troubleshooting area of Repair
Manual.

cylinders misfire for 99 lexus ES300

I have been driving 99 lexus ES300 with CEL and TRAC on since I bought it from the dealer. I drove over 30k miles with CEL on and off, and now it is 172000 miles. Suddenly one day the engine started giving problems, vibrating heavily at idling and had it checked a dealer, they did OBD II digaonistics and they found P1133, P1146, P1149 codes and three cylinder misfire codes for cylinders #1,#3 & #5. They did all kind of tests and found that this is due to bad ECU.
Can ECU go bad and supply wrong variables wich causes misfires or it could be A/F sensor malfuction?.
I am driving the car still with this problem, will it damange the engine?

the VSC and Check engine

the VSC and Check engine light turn on for lexus 1999 the cood is p0500

Toyotas and Lexus cars have some unique feaures. If your fuel cap is loose or the O2 sensors on the exhaust are faulty this results in an emission problem and the engine computer unit (ECU) engages the check engine light and disables the VSC (the VSC light comes on to warn you that it has been disabled). However you have p0500 code which says the car has no speed sensor signal. The seed sensor is located on the side of the final drive from the transmission and its job is to measure the speed of rotation of the output shaft. The ECU will compare the signals from this shaft along with the speed sensors in the wheel hubs. If there is a difference between these signals the VSC is engaged to apply braking effort to which ever wheel is slipping (running faster) than the other or that the transmission speed sensor would warrant.
So you either have an emission fault has fed back to the VSC and speed sensor missing (p0500) condition, or you have a faulty sped sensor which has tripped the VSC light and in turn the CEL.
Check your fuel filler cap is on tight, turn radio off and disconnect the negative lead to the battery for 5 minutes (this should clear the ECU memory of the code error). If p0500 error and CEL and VSC lights come back on then check the electrical connection to the speed sensor. Ensure it is clean and making a good contact, check the wiring for continuity. If everything else looks good consider changing the speed sensor.

I have a Lexus ES300 with a code P0420 showing a bad catalytic converter or Fuel System Malfunction. It appears the converter was replaced with a muffler but the light remained on. When I'm at a stop, the car smells like its running rich. Do I just need to get someone to reset the code or did the replacement cause another problem?

Hi, a car that's running rich can also cause this code to set. You might want to check your fuel pressure regulator for a torn diaphragm. The regulator is on top of the engine connected to the fuel rail and looks like the picture below. Pull the vacuum hose off the regulator and plug the hose with a golf tee. Then start the car and watch for any fuel that spits out of the vacuum port of the regulator. This indicates a torn diaphragm. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using Fixya.
