How do you know if
You will know if the timing belt is broken if the car does not start. Then you can pull the valve cover off and crank the engine over and see if the rocker arms move. If they move, then the timing belt is not broken. And usually when a timing belt breaks, it bends valves and you will hear the pistons hitting the valves. This is not good at all. If this happens, you will have to have a new head or at very minimum have the valves replaced. Another way to check the timing belt is to pull the timing cover and see if the top cam pulley is turning.
During the last 8 months the battery in my mercury
Check the power to ignition harness. As you mentioned battery is new, alternator is new and alternator belt is new.All this parts checked ok but still car dies, then get the ignition harness checked. In ignition harness check the power wire,it should have 12 volts. If not the problem relates to ignition switch and its connections.
Check the fuses ion fuse box under the dash and under the hood.If all fuses checked out ok then try the battery disconnect procedure.Get your battery checked and alternator checked. If both checked ok,then check the starter to battery connections. If all checked out ok then get your car once jump started.once the car runs, then drive it for few hours and then turn turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery terminal of car for few hours,Then before re-starting the car, just re check the battery voltage. If its proper 12 voltage. Then reconnect the negative terminal of your battery to car and see,if its starting. If the car starts normally, then its some electrical short in car, which is draining or shorting the battery. But if its not starting then the battery has to be replaced and checked with new battery.------------ This troubleshooting should help.Thanks.Helpmech.
