2001 mercury mountaineer starts fine but sometimes won't start at all

I'm going to first assume that you've checked the battery terminals for gunk build-up. If the electrical system is OK, then the problem likely lies in the gas delivery. You might want to check out the starter anyway. Also, replace the fuel filter and put some Sea Foam or equivalent carb/electric ignition jet cleaner in the gas tank. I might add that your car is 17 years old. Start looking. . .

Not sure what Mom of three has to do with anything, but you need to do basic troubleshooting. Test fuel pressure (test gauge often available from parts store "loan a tool" program. Could also be faulty ignition module (remove from car and parts store will normally test for free). Might also be dirty throttle blade sticking open such that IAC can't work properly, or even sticking EGR valve.

Are the door locks on a fuse system, what do I need to buy

Door locks are fused and most are run from a relay. Don't buy anything until the lock system is properly diagnosed so you do not end up buying parts that are not needed and can't be returned

I have a 2001 mountaineer 4.0 4x4 with the 5r55- trans, was told it had been taken in for a trans flush and oil chamge , at that time no problems, few days later noticed tranny fluid was leaking,

If the oil is not cherry red or smells burnt then there was not an oil change done for oil to burn in such a short time, you would have had indications of problems early on and not a few days later. for transmission problems run the fault codes as they will give a good indication of problems that are repairable If you are still worried, have an accredited transmission shop do a pressure test , band and clutch pack adjustment and a filter clean ,then fill with new oil. The pan will be off to do the adjustments and filter so any major failure will be noticeable at that time.

Insructions on how to install a radio in a 2001 murcury mountaineer

You need special tools to remove the stock radio. Looks like an allen wrench bent into a U shape. Fits into the two holes on both sides of the front of the radio. Then its just a matter of connecting the new radio to old harness. Easier if you have an adapter from Crutchfield or another company.

If the lights in the console are functional then it is most likely not fuse related. These consoles are notorious for going bad. Check out www.autoclockrepair.com I have removal instructions and info there. Please let me know if I can be of further help, thanks!

How to change freeze plugs on 2001 mercury mountnier with a 302 engine

This is a tuff freeze plug to get to. If the plug is fully exposed you can punch a hole it and pry it out with a screw driver. Once out you can replace it with an expandable rubber freeze plug to get the job done in the car. If not this may require pulling the drive train down to get at it or pull the engine to make the repair. Feel the freeze plug with your fingers to determine the best route.
