VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Tells the PCM (computer) the speed of the vehicle so the PCM can make the proper information to the TCM (transmission control module) to shift.
YOU are goin gto need a scan tool NOt a code reader to monitor the VSS to see what it is putting out for speed when the car is moving But I believe you need a VSS but do not not Go out and buy one until you have had it tested , and can positively confrim it is bad first. Please rate this a fixya if you find this advice helpful, Thanks Randy

Check the dash light dimmer switch. Perhaps it's set to have the interior lights on, when you turn the dash lights all the way bright, turning it a little more turns the interior lights on. Let us know how you make out.

1999 mercury sable front wheel bearing

Not too bad. Just remove the Wheel and the Brake Calipers. Then remove the Dust Cap off the Center of the Rotor. Inside there is a Bolt with a Cotter Pin In it. Remove the Cotter Pin and the Bolt. The Rotor will now Slide off the Spindle, The Bearings are Loose and Probably inside the Rotor. Remove these Bearings and get a Tube of High Temp Grease. Put a Big gobb of grease in the Palm of your hand and Roll the Bearing around in your Hand. Be sure to use your Fingers on the Inside of the Bearings to get it in. The same Goes with New Bearings.

1999 Sable Brake line fluid leak

I have a 1999 Sable with brake line fluid leak in middle of chassis by driver door(underneath)  There is an unusual part joining front & back brake lines that is leaking on both ends.  It looks like rubber grommets are the joint to the brake lines.  It is hard to see because I am in Michigan and we have snow, salt, water, dirt, mud and it's hard to find time to crawl under rusty vehicle to look thoroughly at the leaking joint in 20F and 20MPH winds.  Brake light is on and pedal goes to floor.  I keep filling fluid but leak is out of hand.  Does anyone know what kind of part joins lines together in mid-chassis?  Why isn't line continuous to back? Why the break & add another part?  I thought I would ask before I 1) buy a service manual & figure it out myself.  2) Take it to dealer & pay $$$.  I am poor & trying to make ends meet.  Thank you for any help !!  If I have an answer, I can call friends that will work for beer.  Thanks - Superbuuck

Here you go. you will need an alignment after his install. U MUST HAVE THE CAR AS HIGH UP ON JACK STANDS AS POSSIBLE.

Instructions Things You'll Need:

  • Jack and jack stands, you must have these.
  • Cotter pins
  • Tie rod end nuts
  • Power steering hose seals
  • Power steering hose fitting tool
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1 Turn the steering wheel one-quarter turn to the right. Turn the ignition to "OFF." Support the front end, and remove the front wheels. Disconnect and remove the tie rod ends by loosening the jam nuts before removing the cotter pins and nuts. Discard the pins and nuts.
  2. Step 2 Shift the boot to give you clear access and remove the bolt that connects the intermediate shaft coupling. Remove the subframe bolts. Use jack stands to support the rear end of the front subframe and remove those bolts. Discard all of the removed bolts then lower the rear front subframe 4 inches.
  3. Step 3 Disconnect the steering gear bracket and detach it from the rack assembly. Disconnect the hoses and discard the seals. Pull the rack assembly through the left fender well and replace it with the new one.
  4. Step 4 Add new seals to the steering hose fittings and reconnect them. Reattach the bracket and tighten the nuts to 85 to 100 foot pounds of torque. Raise the subframe back into position (4 inches), making sure to guide the intermediate shaft coupling into place. Attach with new bolts, tighten to 57 to 76 foot pounds of torque and pull the jack stands out of the way.
  5. Step 5 Center and turn the steering gear input shaft one-quarter turn to the right. Make sure the coupling will fit the input shaft correctly and connect with a new bolt. Shift the boot back into position and install the tie rod ends (use the same number of turns you used when you removed them).
  6. Step 6 Use new nuts to reconnect the tie rod ends and secure with a new cotter pin. Tighten the jam nuts to 35 foot pounds of torque. Remount your front wheels.
  7. Step 7 Reconnect your battery and fill the power steering system. Check for leaks. Adjust the front end to align the wheels correctly.

Here ya go!

3.0L DOHC VIN S Engine
CAUTION NEVER open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities.Always drain coolant into a sealable container. If necessary, clean coolant maybe reused unless it is contaminated or more than two years old.

  1. Drain the coolant until the level of the coolant is below the level of the thermostat.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet connection.
  4. Unfasten the two water inlet connection retaining bolts and remove the water inlet connection.
  5. Remove the O-ring seal and thermostat from the water inlet connection. Inspect the O-ring for damage and replace as necessary.
To install:
  1. Clean the water inlet connection mating surfaces.
  2. Install the O-ring, thermostat and the water inlet connection. Refer to Figure 10 if you can't remember how the O-ring and thermostat are positioned.
  3. Install the water inlet connection assembly retainers and tighten them to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  4. Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection.
  5. Fill the engine with coolant, start the engine and check for leaks.
  6. Stop the engine and top off the coolant recovery reservoir as necessary.
