The service light comes on
The service light is designed to do just that. It is very easy to reset. There is a black rubber cover on your instrument cluster. Remove that with a pick or small screwdriver. Then you push the button behind it to reset the light.

most liklely you will need to check the level of antifreeze in the cooling system and if its ok and there is no leake then you will need to change the thermostatic switch.

My first suspect is the water temperature sensor in the side of the head. You are looking for the one with two wires that communicates with the fuel injection, not the one with one wire that goes to the water temperature indicator in the dash cluster. If the 940 is like a late 240, it will be really difficult to get at, and you may have to take the intake manifold loose to get a wrench on it. That's OK, you are probably due for a new intake manifold gasket anyway.

Dear all
I have volvo
The low acceleration is caused by a low fuel pressure: either there is dirt in the tank that is blocking the sump or the fuel pump is failing. Take out the tank to clean it thoroughly and replace the pump.
The engine dies when you take of the feet on the accelerator pedal because the idle air valve that should kick in to allow extra air to bypass the closed throttle is reacting slowly.Take out the throttle assembly and clean it thoroughly - valves, air channels and throttle shafts and bearings. While you are there clean and check the air flow meter.

1994 Volvo 940 Station Wagon timing belt
I hope you've solved the problem by now, but there are alignment marks on the crank shaft (top pulley), idler (lower side), and cam shaft (smaller, bottom pulley) which should be aligned with stationary marks on the timing belt rear cover.
The belt has marks that align with the aforementioned marks (lines). The double marks on the belt align with the camshaft marks and the single marks with the others.
Loosen the tensioner clamp (nut) to allow the spring loaded tensioner to press on the belt and retighten the nut.
Rotate the crank shaft (clockwise, probably two revolutions) and make sure the pulley marks realign to the marks on the cover (they don't have to realign with the marks on the belt).
Rotate the crank shaft a full revolution once the belt is on and check that alignment is preserved.
Periodically loosen and retension the tensioner nut (access through a hole in the cover) to ensure that tension is maintained as the belt relaxes.

if the thermostat is broken the fan should keep turning. Check the fan if it spins once you get the car warmed. Otherwise it could be a blown fuse or relay for the fan or the fan itself may be bad. Check the radiator hoses and the radiator cap for loose or worn parts. Steam may escape there decreasing the water in the cooling system. The problem could be also be with the water pump. If you are to replace the timing belt have the water pump replaced since you will spend the same effort getting to both the timing belt and water pump. It is recommended that this be done by a specialist to avoid damaging the engine.
