My car lights and brake
Sounds to me like a brake light switch is sticking or is faulty/bad wires. The switch is connected slightly above the pedal. And they are relatively cheap.

Car overheated and won't start
Have you checked compression to see if you damaged the head gasket ? ?I would start there and then check for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure. Also pull a few spark plugs and inspect them for damage.
Found fuel in air filter compartment
The evap system sends fuel to throttle body to be burned and to not escape in the atmosphere. Now if its gas fumes then you dealing with a no spark situation if it is gas liquid you got a problem with the fuel pressure regulator.ad you will need to inspect your oil and check for raw gas this method you have to use your nose.More than anything else you are dealing with a no spark situation the volvo uses a power stage this component is located at the front of the inner left fender well. When this fails you have no spark, you also have a cranksensor mounted at the transmission bell housing if this looses it signal you also will have no spark. To check for spark you need to have someone crank the vehicle as one of the spark plug wire is given a 1/4 air gap and as it is crank spark should be seen
Where is the thermostat and how do i test it
follow top radiator hose it will take you to the thermostat housing.to check thermostat when engine is hot both radiator hoses should be hot to touch if the top radiator hose going to thermostat housing is cool not hot when engine is hot. the thermostat stuck closed causing engine to over heat need to replace thermostat and radiator pressure cap.when replacing thermostat make sure to pay attention to position of thermostat so you can install new thermostat in the same position.
1994 940 Volvo wagon turbo
It truly sounds like a loose or faulty/corroded ground wire. Almost 99% of the electrical problems I have experienced with Volvo's are loose wire related. There are a number of ground wires underneath the hood grounding the engine. However my first suspect would be the connections on the alternator and battery.
Hope this helps.
