I want to understand the "overdrive"
When the button is pressed and the arrow indicator light is on the overdrive gear is not being used and you only have 3 speeds. When the button is pressed and the light is off you have overdrive. Normal use you should not see the arrow.
I have a 1991 740 volvo, was driving down he
Check if you still getting fuel and sparks, two items need to keep the car running. Check fuses and fuel pump relay, if needing new relays go to the junk yard and get couple of them for nothing. Checking making sure you getting fuel and fuel pump working properly, unplug the the main coil wire to distributor so the car wont start we just want the engine just to turn over. under the hood, locate fuel filter, disconnect the line to or from it, wrap the bottom of the hose with old clothe firmly and to remember to point the house downward away from your face so it wont splash at you. and have a friend turn ignition over just like starting, see if the fuel come out with good pressure. if fuses and relay check out, your crank sensor may be bad, being 91' strong possibility. crank sensor send info to computer telling to send fuel to your injectors. For sparks, make sure you plug the main wire to distributor back. pull one plug wire and get spare plug, plug it and ground the plug and have a friend turn the engine over and see if you getting sparks, do not touch the plug, big shock. No sparks, check the coil if you getting 12v, if yes, than your cam sensor is faulty. The cam sensor work just like the crank sensor but telling the computer to send sparks to the distributor. Common for older European cars, crank and cam sensor tend to become faulty after years of service due to age and heat abuse.
No brake lights, rest of lights are fine
Look under the brake pedal, up near where it is connected. You'll have to get down in the floorboard. Push the pedal all the way down and see if the button contact is being pressed when you do. If it isn't, loosen it and move it up or down until it is. If it is being pressed in far enough for contact, it is most likely a faulty switch if you are certain the fuses are alright.
Broken odometer
Its very easy just to replace this, just go on ebay,on find one close to your miles, all you have to do is pull the dash out, unplug the old one and plug in the new one.
1991 240 gl not starting.
Sounds like a starter problem. Check that the connections at battery and starter are secure and free of corrotion. You can also try tapping on the starter while the ignition swith is being turned to the start position. If that works replace starter. The stalling can be caused by a number of problems: idle too low, fuel pump pressure to low, air mass and or oxygen sensor malfuctioning. A process of elimination.
91 volvo 240 won't start after long trips/multiple short trips
If you mean that when you try and start it the engine actually turns over but does not start, then check out the following info (I had a similar problem on my 1989 Volvo 240. It would start fine sometimes, other times it would not start even though it would crank) . It turned out to be the fuel pump relay.
When you try starting your car and you can not hear the fuel pump turned on (sound coming from the left underside of the car in front of the left rear tire), do the following if you think this is your issue (no cost for trouble shooting and takes 10 minutes to do):
The fuel pump relay is behind the access panel under the glove box. The panel is easy to remove - just unscrew each of the 5 panel knobs/fasteners a quarter turn and the panel comes out/down. The fuel pump relay is a white plastic cartridge with a wire harness going to it. Just unclip it from the metal clip that retains it and leave it hanging there. When the car doesn't start and just cranks, lean over and tap the relay while you are trying to start the car (tapping it shakes the contacts inside that would normally switch over to complete the circuit when it is energized). If this is your issue and you can repeat the solution by tapping the relay when starting the car, buy a new one (I got mine at www.ipdusa.com for around $14) and kept the old one in the trunk just in case.
Hope this helps.

Overdrive Relay
I used a precision tool kit to pry it off. The white part is just a cover. It is a little tricky, but eventually it will pull off. Once it has been taken off it will be easier in the future. If the relay ends up not being the problem i recommend buying an over-drive bypass plate from IPD (
www.ipdusa.com). I had the same problem and it fixed it! For only $40 it was a fix it and forget it thing. My overdrive solenoid had gone out on me.
How do I disconnect the overdrive realy
Hey try this. Buy an over-drive bypass plate from IPD (
www.ipdusa.com). I had the same problem with my 91 Volvo 940 Turbo. My overdrive solenoid went out, but that would have been $160 to replace. The bypass plate was only $40 and it fixed my problem.
