Should be internally regulated within the alternator. It may still be adjustable however.

1992 240 Volvo automatic transmission won't shift out of 3rd gear

Check the transmission filter, may be clogged up, do not change the oil, keep the same oil when replacing filter, trust me to avoid transmission repair.

Engine knocks and shakes at high speeds

Knocking is from carbon on the cylinders. Try a strong fuel system cleaner like BG-44K. Or get a carbon depletion service at an auto shop.

Shaking is probably from worn engine mounts, get them replaced at a shop.

Locate the horn relay. You can check the column mounted switch here and also power the horns directly.

Removed caliper and brake pads on 1991 240 volvo need info to put every thing back the right way.

Go to your local library and look up the procedure in a Volvo service manual. The manuals usually pics that are usefull. Haynes is the better and Bentley is best. Use Chilton or Motor as a last resort.

91 240 weather sensative

CHECK YOUR OXYGEN SENSOR AND YOUR EXHAUST MANIFOLD COULD BE WARPED AS WELL WHICH CREATES CONFUSION WITH YOUR FUEL INJECTION. YEARS AGO, I HAD/WASTED A LOT OF TIME/MONEY. A RECALL OF THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS (THIN COVERING) CURED THE HOT WEATHER SICKNESS, BUT I DID HAVE BLOW BY FROM THE
MANIFOLD WHICH VOLVO REGIONAL MANAGER COVERED AS WELL. IT TOOK A LONG TIME
FOR THE RIGHT V PERSON TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE HARNESS RECALL

My son just loosened the bolts holding front brake

I myself have never known that just from removing the 'fixing' bolts.
However, there is a good chance that the cylinder seals have gone.
Just buy a replacement kit.
They're not too expensive, and relatively simple change.
Dont forget to refill to the correct level, and bleed the system properly.
Hope that helped.

1991 Volvo 240 backup lights do not work

The 240 was always a bit susceptible to poor electrical connections in the taillights. Check all the connections at the taillights thoroughly and then work back through the wiring. The other major possibility is that the reverse-engaged switch (is engaged by gear shift) has failed. I can't remember off the top of my head, how to get at a Volvo's switch but a bit of poking around the gearstick should probably find it for you.
Hope this helps - please message me if you require extra info/help Sherwin

How do I remove the steering column lock on a 240

it is secured on by 2 headless security bolts, they need cut off or ground out to get the lock off, but as you say a new lock can be fitted after this and the car started normally, so you can butcher the old lock since you have time and space to do so, and you can move the car as soon as the old lock is off.

Alternatively, you can get a slide hammer (google it) and using the self-tapping screw attachment, screw it into the lock where the key would go, then a few tugs of the slide hammer weight should pull the guts out of the ignition barrel, allowing you to turn it with a flat screwdriver.

I replaced the timing belt and was certain that

Usually this symptom you described indicates a camspocket is off one tooth, bring the engine to top dead center cylinder # 1 firing stroke and double check the cam spocket is lined up with its appropriate mark, be sure the crank shaft pulley mark or notch is lined up to the zero mark on the motors front cover at the time of the cam sprocket timing mark line up check, also be sure there are no damaged or leaking vacuum lines.
