use an assorted number of lengths (extension bars) to get back to where you can turn the socket. Use a universal joint to get alignment.
Can't find reverse on my 91 Volvo 240. 5 spd
There are screws around the rubber boot. You can remove them and pull the boot up from beneath the carpet and see what is up. The detent collar is a pretty simple mechanism. There is a plastic stop that the shifter hits, and goes past when you pull up the collar. That plastic stop may need to be loosened and re-adjusted, or perhaps there is some foreign object in there that is keeping the shifter from moving to the end of its throw when you pull the collar.
