They switch back and forth at the door panel switch for up and down. I test form power and polarity using a simple 12v test light/probe at the switch, grounding the test light clip to a bolt and then trace the power to the motor from there.

Sounds like you have a hole in the under body somewhere.

Check for rusted body parts,suspension mounts etc May have to replace the springs Shocks have nothing to do with ride height

use an assorted number of lengths (extension bars) to get back to where you can turn the socket. Use a universal joint to get alignment.

There are screws around the rubber boot. You can remove them and pull the boot up from beneath the carpet and see what is up. The detent collar is a pretty simple mechanism. There is a plastic stop that the shifter hits, and goes past when you pull up the collar. That plastic stop may need to be loosened and re-adjusted, or perhaps there is some foreign object in there that is keeping the shifter from moving to the end of its throw when you pull the collar.
