I have a 1997 850 volvo and it will not start
Hey Bass!
Have you checked the OBD2 for any error codes?
In order for an engine to start it needs sufficient spark, reasonable fuel/air-mixture and enough compression.
Since your car is an 850 you should check your fuel pump relay, which is infamous for causing intermittent starting problems. Open the hood and remove the fuse box cover (4 torx screws), revealing the relays. If one of them is a green one marked 103 you should replace it with the newer, improved red relay. A used relay is cheap and should do just fine.
Also, you should be able to hear the fuel pump working when turning the ignition to on. After doing this a couple of times the pressure becomes high enough for the pump not to engage. If so wait for the pressure to drop before listening for it again.
Here's a topic with some info on the relay and how to check the voltage at the pump:

Checking a plug for spark is easy:
Unscrew the plug and hold it to ground with a pair of insulated pliers or something similar while the problem is present. Have someone crank the engine while you look for spark. Should the engine start while lacking one plug it will sound horrible, but will not be harmed as long as you don't run it too long and don't rev it.
If you have no spark and the rotor, plugs and wires are new the problem is probably coil, camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor.
You might also want to clean you throttle body. It's cheap and easy and will improve the engine performance even if it might not be the culprit.
Good luck, mate!
Volvo V40 Driver side electric window . Goes down
sounds like a missing tooth or stripped gear on the motor or moon gear on the regulator, the door will have to be taken apart and the regulator or motor replaced. If you can grab the top of the glass with your fingers
GENTLY pull up while pressing the switch. it may catch another tooth and go up. (**Do not use pliers or
any other tool to grab the glass**)
Hope this helps
Car will not start, left ignition on overnight
you may have burnt the coil pack and the ignition switch: start with the coil pack first replace it and try “autozone.com” or your local library for diagrams and step by step instructions
Actually its a 1985 240 dl
I have had simular problems It took about a year to find.
What I found is as these volvos get old you start to run into electrical problem such as the plastic insulation begins to go stiff & hard. What happens is the wire in hot areas in engine bay develop cracks in the insulations & the copper wire gets contaminated & breaks. The wire looks perfect but under load or movement you run into intermittent faults.
How do you find the fault!!
Well wiggle the wiring loom in the engine bay very carefully while engine is running & look for stiff & damaged wires.
If your very keen its a very big job from the grey multiway connector on the fire wall just above & behind the engine replace all the suspect wires down to the engine. Not recomended unless your confident & you have a copy of the wiring loom.

Remove your oil cap, try to start, look inside to see if the cam is turning,if not your timing belt in broken.
1984 Volvo 244 240 DL Stalled and won't start! Please Help
I just put my volvo (same car, possibly the same engine as yours) through a rebuild, and if there is one thing I MUST point out, it is that the head gaskets and the fuel pumps start to act up and give out. Check cylinder pressure, check the P.C.V. system. Another suggestion is to check the last time your fuel filter was replaced. It may be Clogged. Also, on 1980's v-vo's, they had 2 fuel pumps, so get the fuels system pressure checked, one may be broken. The last things I can suggest are the vacuum to the fuel system regulator (fuel injected), distributor point gap (if yours uses points), and the vacuum and electronic emission/operation controls around the car. I hope this helps you out.
My car wont keep a charge
Hi,
From your very brief description I can only guess a response?
First is the Battery o.k? next is there a glove box light or boot/trunk light stayng on? does the Radio turn off when ignition is off?
Check all areas for possible power drain, failing this I presume you have the B23 or B20 engine? your alternator Diode pack may be faulty leaving an open circuit when not in use.
You could try disconnecting the alternator to see if it sorts it.
Finally try using a Multi meter to see how much drain is being taken from battery when engine is not running.
Hope you sort it?

Parking light - how to replace? 240 DL
these are easy. pull the cover off of the light assembly inside the trunk by turning the screws at the bottom. find the bulb that you want to replace once inside and gently turn the bulb holder until it comes free. the bulb inside will itself twist out. put the new one in, reverse the process and drive on.
Tail light problems
You have 2 choices. Order a new PC board provided you know it really is bad. I just checked mine and found that by jiggling the wires and securing them to the harness better the lights began working. Sometimes some electrical contact jelly on the underside of the piece where the harness hooks to the light can make them work. If that fails and the bulbs are good, look for a replacement in the wrecking yard (entire light assembly) or look on-line for a new plastic circuit board. I have done both and found the new circuit board wasn't too bad to put in but I had to re-wire that light to get the lights to work the way I wanted them too.
