My alternator light is working and the alternator is good but the battery is still being drained. Battery is good also. What is wrong?

place a test light between the neg battery cable and the battery see how bright the light is remove fuses til the light dims that is the circuit draining the battery glove box lights and alternator diodes so you may need to unplug the alternator it could charge and still draw down the battery when not running

Whole fuel system

The main fuel pump in a Volvo is really well built and rarely fails (Bosch simply makes great fuel pumps). A good survival trick if you think a main fuel pump might be bad... give it a quick tap with a wrench. For best results, if possible, tap the pump when cranking the engine (while power is going to the pump). If the pump is bad, often the tap will make it come to life and it may stay running until you shut it off. This trick can get you back on the road and get you home in an emergency. If it's a bad fuel pump relay, this will NOT work as there will be no power going to your pump. If this is the case, you might try the below relay bypass "jump" trick to get power going to the pump. TESTING YOUR FUEL PUMPHow to "JUMP" the fuel pump circuit at your Volvo 240 fuse panel:The fastest method to make the main fuel pump run (bypassing the Fuel Pump Relay) is by jumping two circuits at the fuse panel (left side driver's kick panel). You can make a jumper from a wire with stripped ends or even a straightened paperclip. Jump the circuits on the right side of the fuses for best results For a 1979-84 240, jump fuse circuit #5 to #7. For a 1985-93 240, jump fuse circuit #4 to #6.

If the main fuel pump doesn't begin running when jumped (you should definitely hear it humming), you either have a faulty fuel pump or faulty wiring to the pump (bad wiring is really common under an old 240, near the pump). This test of course assumes your battery is good. If one of the fuses blows during this test, the pump circuit wiring is shorting to ground somewhere between the fuse panel and the pump. thx

My 240 volvo windshield wipers work then suddly stop. Sometimes they stall when they are in the middle of the windshield. Is it a crossed wire or motor issue?

Check the connectors to make sure they are not getting wet or leaking, this can cause corrsion on the terminals.and intermittent operation. When it is open, fill the cavity with dielectric grease to displace any air and to occupy space where water may otherwise collect. Check the harness as well for abraided wiriing or broken grounding wires. Also make sure the grounding wires are attached to clean spot on the body including those for the turn signals. Also check to make sure the main bulkhead harness connection through the firewall is soundly attached and clean. it would not hurt to fill those cavities with dielectric grease as well for the same reasons as above. Where ground wires come together should also be inspected for corrosion and broken connections. And for added measure- replace the fuse. Even if it looks good, these can age and become intermittent.

You need to check your engine wiring harness. 84 is part of the crumbling, corroding wiring insulation years. If your harness has not been replaced, you may have to really scrounge around to find one of the "new" versions that has okay insulation on the wiring.

I have a 1992 Volvo

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
The problem can be just fuse for parking lights. Please check if you have blown fuses somewhere and replace them. You may just have system failure too. Please remove the positive battery connector, let it sit for atleast 5mins. or more before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and can get it back to it's normal operation.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Central locking not working draining battery.

i used to have the same problem with my '83 what happened is that my came from up-north so in the 240 volvo up to 1986 the wire is "bio degradable" or something like that what happened is when you touch it practically turns in dust... go to the junk yard and get the wire that goes in the driver side is like plastic ring with 3 wires and that will fix the problem... all of them are the same up to 93, get the newest

What's wrong with my 1985 Volvo 240 if it won't

I had this problem and had to rebuild nearly the entire wiring harness, in my case, from the alternater to the starter. My wires had water damage and some rodent chews! Hope this helps, check harness.

Won't hold a charge. Have had Alternator and

If the lights are dim when the car is running, it is not charging well. Who tested the alternator? Is the alternator well grounded to the engine? I think those older alternators required a ground strap around the alternator mounting.
Though I suspect the problem is not a drain, the way to find the drain on this car is to disconnect one battery cable and put a voltmeter between the cable and the battery terminal. If it is draining, you will see 12.6 volts on the meter. If you see only 3 or 4 volts, it is not draining.
(note that this technique does not work on newer cars with computers, and some dash clocks can confound this test)
Assuming that you see full battery voltage, start pulling fuses until the voltage showing on the meter drops. When that happens, you are on the right track. At least you will know what fuse to pull at night to keep it from draining.
