1997 Mercury Mountaineer Overdrive flashing

When the OD light flashes it means the transmission has developed a fault. As to what the fault may be is yet to be seen without the system being scanned. In many cases the light indicates the transmission is slipping, you may not feel it slipping, but the computer (called the PCM) senses it through the internal speed sensors that measure main shaft input speed and shaft output speed in RPM. Other problems like shift solenoids can cause this as well. Another factor can be the transmission fluid is worn out, it should be replaced along with a new filter every 60,000 miles minimum.

Will not fire up.could it be spark plug. if not what would you think

Check a part called an "Inertia Switch". This is a protection device which cuts the power to the fuel pump. The location of this switch varies. It can be behind a panel in the rear Cargo area next to the Air-ride switch and others are around the front floor kick panels. Web search for your model and year and check out parts sites for photos of the Inertia switch. It has a reset switch which only needs to be pressed.

Plug wires diagram

Place plug wires in order, from shortest to longest on ground beside vehicle, or on a portable work table. Carefully match the length of the shortest one to the shortest on motor. Lay the new wire alongside the old and remove one end of old, attaching the same end of the new one and then do the same to the other end. Fairly simple so far, so repeat this procedure with all the remaining ones one at a time, being carefull to only remove one end at a time, and also be sure of plug wire lengths. Note wires are routed the way that they are to keep them from contacting any hot surfaces or moving parts. Last step: put hands on hips and admire the fine job you just did!
