My civic's D16Y7 is losing

My civic did the same thing, twice, no over heating on the gauge, but the head gasket on both engines broke in the same place, #1 cyl. there is a TSB on the head gaskets, I replaced it with a felpro head gasket, had the head checked for cracks and decked, runs smooth and my wife gets 40 MPG
Pull the #1 spark plug and check for coolant on the plug. make sure you flush the cooling system.

Red light on maintenance required

the maintenance schedule is in the owners manual on the last 2 pages I believe, But here are some of the things to check the maintenance schedule on that car calls for oil changes every 3,750 miles if you primarily use the car around town or 7,500 if you do mostly highway driving without stop and go traffic. Most cars should go by the 3,750 schedule.

tire rotations should be every 7,500 miles. Brakes should be checked when the tires are rotated.

the major service on the 4 cylinder is every 30,000 miles. that includes the tune-up items of replacing spark plugs, adjusting the valves, replacing the air filter, transmission fluid, interior cabin filter and the inspections and adjustments.

the 6 cylinder does not need the valve adjustment or spark plug replacement until 105,000 miles. otherwise, the fluids and filter replacements are every 30k.

the timing belt on both the 4 cyl and the 6 cyl is 105,000. at that time the water pump and coolant are also replaced as well as the other accessory drive belts.

Brake fluid should be replaced every 3 years or 45,000 miles.

Knock sensor

why do that? why are you asking. is the ECU throwing DTCs for knock? if yes, post the DTC, dont use the words we want the real TDC numbers. even consider the engine is knocking? try to think like a PCM it is always listening to Mr. Knock microphone. it is always adjusting spark timing to correct it. what if it could not stop the knock? (lean fuel mix>?) a real ASE would see if the knock was real first. when you use low octane fuel this sensor, allows the the engine to adjust timing for the faster burning fuel. it retards timing. so do post ALL DTCs not just 1 of many. and do check AFR. AF/R Air fuel ratios. all knock sensors you , remove bolt and it comes off, (just look) or it unscrews itself like other sensors, like oil pressure or ECT. the fsm covers this, ever seen one>.? id recommenced not not working on cars FSM free, sure would. and for sure noobs. and if a noob, there are vast dangers , working on cars, and worse. alldata.com has this too. if you have to ask how to remove or what it is, or where is it that is all noob questions. they are ok. but why not post all symptoms and DTC errors. first. then we can talk tests. and how to gather evidence.

1999 honda civic auto 1590cc no injector pulse

the eCU never injects if it ever thinks there is bad spark or spark precursors (ckp/cmp sensors) and hark tells you, with the scan tool just that. ever used a scan tool> real>? in your case this is true, (3 second dropP here are the correct steps. 1: fuses good. 2: key on, immoblizer lamp out. (got that? option?) 3: CEL , Charge and brake warning lamps all on, if CEL is out the ECU is dead. CEL means Check engine light ( aka: MIL or SES) 4: plug in scan tool to 16pin port (USA cars, i dont do non usa cars) and the obd2 scan tool comunicates and works, if not , pin 16 fuse is blown to 16pin DLC connnector. if Scan tool works. and you see the TPS move with right foot action then crank car for 5seconds. the ECU will show RPM work. 250? then may throw 2 DTC'S or more. P0340./355 etc, telling you why it cut the main relay, and all injections. The ECU is amazing, this way, the ECU can also see primary spark bad, and show that i can not see , secondary spark bad. (until running and that is called misfire) get the scan tool they rent cheap or free. in USA. if not in the USA all comments here are useless. other countries use OBD1 or other protocoals. known exactly what engine your car counts big time. as EFI varies greatly by this. D16y5,7,8? B16A2? both are 1.6L 15 D engines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_D_engine and lots of B16s seen here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_B_engine#B16A2 first know what engine, then get the FSM and learn what makes it happy. each engine can have unique spark systems. (3 possible world wide) distributor. wasted spark, coil. 2 dual coil packs.? COPS, 4 cops on top plugs? each has unique troubleshooting techniques. ask.

I have a 99 civic 4 door and the engine surges at idle

hot engine or cold, or both??????????????????? surging or hunting idle is complex but for sure the ECU has lost control of idle speed , there are 2 macro reasons, (vast causes) 1: ISC is stuck (in non SAE terms, the idle speed control valve ) is stuck. 2: engine is missing cause the ISC to GO NUTS trying to control idle and can not.. the 50 reasons, , have list ask. we do tests to find out if either or both the above are bad. do you want tests, or guessing>???

P0420 p1399

99 civic? ever tune it up, or run the cam belt fore ever? you do now, ignoring the bent, ends in bent valves, right? which engine option, cylinder count and displacment. USA 1.6L? I-4? misfiring. ever tune it up this decade? or 60k miles? with cam belt. 1399 is misfire (let me guess, the CEL flashes ) do not skip the belt if due, or you will lunch the engine. 420 is: (ID IGNORE THIS, till the MISFIRE ENDS !!!) Possible causes - Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 - Exhaust tube - Intake air leaks - Fuel injectors may be faulty - Fuel injector leaks - Spark plugs may be faulty - Improper ignition timing - Engine Control Module (ECM) (the bar room answer for 420 is, the CAT is weak, ) the autoshop class>? ASE.. if the cat is or was tortured (misfire) then fix that first and pray the cat bakes dry and passes 42x codes if bake many dry, and 420s cleared. what happens is you overload the CAT with raw fuel, ignore it. the CEL flashing (USA) means you are KILLING THE CAT. now we cover, misfire there are huge possibles. in a big shop we connect 5 gas to tail and start there . in a lesser shop, plenty. we check closed loop at idle if not in closed loop at idle, we fix that first. (easy ,car is parked) (later closed loop at 40mph light flat cruise, steady right foot) no hills. Misfire, : Bad engine, bent a valve> do to ignoring the belt. got vacuum bounce? bad spark bad injection rates, or injectors clogged ,dead or weak or leaking. me, i watch pendings to see of P0301 , to P030x (x is cylinder num) if the scan tools shows any misfire codes, i do a leak down on the cylinder that misfires, 300s is random. lots of ways, EGR stuck open AFR runing lean, scan too sees that... AFR stuck rich, same. the best order is this. (no clues with extra DTCS is: compression test. and leak down. if smart. spark tests. last fueling, rates, (fails closed loop at idle spark good , engine good. i do the the injector leak down tests. and balance, i also do the cAT melted test. cat back pressure test less that 2psi at 2500rpm.
