Misfire just means that one or more of the spark plugs is not firing at all, or fires most of the time and sometimes doesn't. You do have an OBD connector on your car, go to AutoZone, they will plug into it and most likely even tell you what cylinder is misfiring. Check the plug and wire. Usually an easy fix. Plug or Wire.

Random misfiring can be from a problem ECM , loose connections, loose coil/s connections ,water in the distributor cap but mostly from faulty injectors and /or low fuel pressure from failing pump or blocked filters. IF you use an E- fuel that may also be a reason for the problem. If you have washed the engine lately then the moisture around the HT leads and plugs will give the same fault.

your probably not firing on the #4 cylinder. Is there a CEL? (check engine light?

Take the car to any local mechanic and ask them to pull the check enginge light diagnostic codes for you using an obd scanner. It shoudl cost at most about 5 dollars.

Sounds like a 3rd / 4th shaft synchro problem. Maybe it wasn't properly reconditioned!

If this is a used car that you recently purchased - the previous owner may have put a thicker lube in the gear box. It would then require a little time to warm up and thin. This could have been done accidentally or on purpose, with the intention to hide a needed repair.

first check your belt condition, routing, pulleys, and fluid condition. if the tensioner or belt have issues, it could transfer to the component. drain and refill system by removing the return hose and then refilling with whatever hoda recomends. try this first. cheers

make sure its full block dual over head cam (DOHC) it shoud fit. 97 to 99 its the same as far as i know. cause i replaced a 99 with a 97.
