First, I'd try checking your local Library for an AC repair manual. An Ac system has a number of different parts that all work together to cool.

That said, there are some things you can check that are easy.
First, Check the controls. Is the AC on, the blower on, and the temperature selector set on cold? Really check, because this is what is wrong about 10% of the time.

Next, with the car off, find the AC compressor. Is the belt still on it? Have someone start the car and turn the AC on while you watch the compressor. The outer part should turn, and when they turn the AC on, there should be a click, and the inner part will start to turn as the clutch engages.

Next, Look at the fans. If your car has an electric fan, it should come on when the AC has been on for while. If your car has a manual fan, then it might be the fan clutch, but there isn't an easy way to check this.

If it isn't one of the above, then you are probably out of DIY territory. Because of this car's age it probably has R-12, an older type of refrigerant that is no longer manufactured for environmental reasons. The $1100 for the compressor replacement seems high, but that should include evacuating the system and recovering the refrigerant, replacing the compressor, receiver/dryer, and expansion valve, flushing the system of the old refrigerant and oil, replacing the oil some that is r-134 compatible, and installing the updated fittings and o-rings for R-134. You can see how that adds up in terms of time and Parts.

Those are mem-cal codes, unless you changed the ECM the PROM (a separate part inside the ECM) has gone bad or the ECM itself went bad, if you just replaced your ECM with a used one you need to swap PROMS just remove the 2 screws and remove the plate then the PROMS. If this doesn't workYour best avenue is to remove the ECM then go to a parts store that sell Standard Motor Products they have an R+R program and will repair your ECM and PROM and send it back. I'm truly jealous. I thought I got lucky when I bought my 2012 Lincoln in 2017 with 57,900 original miles on it. :) I'm not 100% sure but is that old north star an aluminum block? If so, I would consult GM as to what to use to flush it with. If it was still cast iron, you could probably get away with most any flush. The one thing that I would be careful of is if the water pump is the original, try to get something that is not too corrosive to protect the old shaft and bearing seals. Some of the heavy duty over the counter flushes contain carbolic or phosphoric acid to eat the calcium and lime scale out of your radiator. This is why they used to say that Coca Cola was a good flush because it contained phosphoric and CARBONIC ACIDS. Carbonic acid being the carbon dioxide dissolved in it to give it the fizz. Factory service info. says nothing about the radiator needing to come out . Comes out from the bottom of the vehicle , alternator does . Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection . Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-4.6L.. Remove the radiator support access panel. Refer to Radiator Support Sight Shield Replacement in Body Front End. Remove the front engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End. Remove the upper front mounting bolt from the generator. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. Loosen the rear generator bracket from the engine. Remove the top bolt. Remove the front lower mounting bolt. Remove the lower rear mounting bolt. Remove the upper rear mounting bolt. Remove the duct from the back of the generator. Disconnect the following electrical connections from the generator: • Regulator • Battery output • Heated windshield (if equipped). Remove the front generator A/C bracket. Rotate the generator and remove it from the vehicle.
