Grinding or whining? A lot of power steering pumps kinda whine when turning. How long has it been since you've changed the power steering fluid? Since 2000??? It looses it viscosity kinda like motor oil. I'd change it first, that's the cheapest and easiest thing to do

Yes this could be a head gasket but if it is on the side you fill your oil it could be spill off from filling without a funnel. Clean them up real good and check again. If your gasket is bad your car will be running rough or not holding an idle.

most subarus have the same window switches. Nissan also uses the exact same switches just check that the plugs are the same

Chances are good that you have a blown head gasket. This is a very typical problem with Subaru's with over about 120,000 miles. There is a slight possibility that your radiator is plugged.

Most likely air is being entrained into the PS fluid. Look inside the PS fluid tank while idling - maybe need a heper to turn the steering wheel - if you see foam/bubbles, that is a problem. Often an easy fix with an o-ring ro 2. dig around at www.subaruoutback.org for more info/diagrams.

Valve cover gasket possibly.

did you check the oil leavel? if so and the oil leavel is good it could be the oil pump.

Check all your fuses. Had a similar problem with brothers truck. Found a master fuse hiding under the battery causing problem.

There is a switch on top of your steering column for parking lights. It's there because your lights shut off when you turn the ign. switch off. The switch on the column allows you to turn on your parking lights with the ign. switch off. Try flipping the switch.

Take out the gauge and clean with some cleaning spirit to make sure the dial is moving. IF TOO STUCK TO BE LOOSENED BY CLEANING THEN REPLACE.

Possible thermostat stuck open.
