Timing belt came off. how
ODDS ARE IT IS AN INTERFERANCE ENGINE FIRST BAR THE ENGINE OVER WITH
A POWERBAR IF IT LOCKS UP THERE IS ENGINE DAMAGED (valves or piston)
Location of head gasket on
Between the head and cylinder block . The intake comes off first then valve cover , camshaft , loosen head bolts , disconnect exaust or unbolt exaust manifolod and the head will seperate from the block. The gasket is at that seperation point.
Pops out of gear
Sometimes spray lube on linkages & bushings down at the transmission & at areas where you see movement during shifting, will cure that, otherwise you may need some new bushings at certain areas. Have someone move shifter while you observe different pivot points for too much slop. (movement)

As far as setting the points, they are to be set when the points are at the highest point on one of the cam lobes, does not matter which one.
As far as the distributor, the rotor only has to point to the plug on the compression stroke, not the exhuast stroke.
The zero mark on the front balancer is for timing the engine for number one cylinder only
