Any check engine light or error codes?
I would guess it should be saying it is not getting data or "correct" data from the Block temperature sensor that feeds information to the ECU and the plug timer computer. More than likely corroded contacts. I had similar problem with a 20 yr old car. I disconnected the female connector cleaned with electronic contact spray cleaner and used a toothpick to clean the connector. I also cleaned the male spade connector on the temp sensor with the same spray cleaner and scraped the spade with a sharp blade to bright metal. Put back together, cleared the codes and wala, instant start up just like new. There may be other issues like vacuum line leaks that cause the "give it the gas" hesitation.
