1996 Mercury Villager - Page 9 Questions & Answers
I have a 1996 Mercury Villager (Canadian version)
I would definitely consider the fuel pump. I had long turnover times before starting for years, but even worse was in hot weather it would just stall while driving. Sometimes it would only idle, but not run if you pressed the gas very far. Park it for 20-30 minutes and it would run again without another problem for weeks. Dealers and mechanics kept replacing other things like ignition coils and distributors. After a conversation where someone said they had the same problem, but only when they had less than half a tank of fuel, I knew it was the pump. I replaced it myself and all problems went away.
The fuel leaks back down to the tank and air gets in the lines. Then the pump is slow to build pressure up again. If you turn the key on, but not start, wait 45 seconds, off, on again but not start, wait again, now start it will take a little less time to start, less battery drain, until you fix the problem.
You may not have the heat problem in Canada. But here in Georgia it gets hot enough that if the fuel tank is low and the pump has this problem, it will overheat and shut down till it cools. A full tank helps it keep the pressure up and serves to cool the pump.

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/villagerquest/go here and read the files on this issue. You have water in the door lock actuator connector or you have a wire shorting out on the sharp inner door panel. Also, you can cut a wire that will stop this circuit from working because you don't need it anyway. 1996 mercury villager, timing belt broke
try to jump the car, if it starts, and pull off one of the cable connector from the battery. if the car stop. than you need to change the starter.
if the car will not start with a jump, then you have a bigger problem.
the cost of repair is up to you, if you don't have other means of trasportation then, it is worth, if yu have other idea, then it is your call.
Electrical
If the fan only works on "high" fan speed then you need to buy what is called a blower motor resistor. You might be able to get one from your local parts store. I don't think that is a dealer item because of the age of the car. But if it is it shouldn't be very expensive. This I'm positive will solve the issue with the front fan. Don't have enough information about the rear . Hope this is helpful.
Two codes p0400 and p0325

My back hatch door doen't want to open
You need to climb in the back and remove the plastic panel from the hatch to access the lock. There may be a small access door over the locking mechanism to help you avoid removing the whole thing. Could be dirty and sticky and fixable with a bit of graphite lube.

1996 mercury villager transmission won't go in reverse
You can have a shop diagnose the problem by checking for a computer code that should tell them about the conditon of the sensor or solenoid. You shouldn't have to start over with a new trans, but get referrals to a good shop first. Always check your fluid levels first, make sure they are what they should be and that the fluid looks good and red, not dark and dirty. Sometimes it's the easy stuff that gets overlooked.
