if you can pin point were it is the front or further back could be cv axle or universal joint in drive shaft

Yes u can but you should remove one or both driveshafts. you can unlock your front hubs if they come with manual front locking hubs. and put the transfer case in neutral To b safe I would remove both front a rear driveshafts

I had this noise and found that the fan shroud was being hit by the fan. Renoved the fan shroud and the noise stopped. The shroud had broken into two pieces.

Could be a blend door problem.

If the check engine light does NOT come on when cranking at the times when it won't start, then your ECU is in need of repair.
