Rough idle can be caused by many different things - you need to always start with a basic tune up; spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter, as the vehicle will not perform well if any of these three are bad. Then check all vacuum lines for cracks or breaks and replace as needed. You can also add a fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank. I recommend the black bottle of STP concentrated fuel injector cleaner, and you can purchase that at most Wal-Mart's.
This is my usual recommendation, but in your case if this is a vehicle that you are not familiar with, I would start with a compression test. If you have a low cylinder than nothing short of repairing the engine will help. If all the cylinders are close to the same compression, than the above recommendation should help the way it runs.
Usually spitting and sputtering is more of a timing issue. So the timing belt/chain, whichever you have, may have slipped. Hope this helps and good luck :O)
