I would certainly check your fuel pump, it sounds like its energizing but the onternal brushes are worn out pretty bad.
How do I remove the dash to get to the heater core
If you have never replaced a dash before take it into an auto repair shop, If you think you can tackle this Locate a manual and follow each step carefully, and keep in mind you should try this inside a heated shop if it is cold or you will crack any plastic easily, Keep in mind you may have to remove the refrigerant from the a/c system if equipped. Sometimes if your lucky you can loosen just the right lower part off the dash and split the case if it is too hard to pull the whole case. Be carefull when installing the heater hoses as you can damage a new core if not carefully, I usually use a spray to be able to slide the new hoses on easily, WD40, or a silicone spray is usually good. Also wear gloves there is always sharp edges and sometimes you hands come out of the job looking like a wild cat got a hold of you.
