2000 Mercury Villager - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

I'm assuming it's a fuel injected engine. If so, and you can't see an in-line filter after tracing the lines, it's probably in the fuel tank. If the fuel supply, return, and vent hoses go to the top of the tank, pull the carpeting or back seat, whichever is above the tank, and look for a screw down plate. When you remove the plate, it will give you access to the housing for those items.

easiest way to test the coil is to put a hose about 3-4 inches long on coil then put spark plug in other side of the hose and have a helper turn the key. look for a blue spark at the plug. if no spark then that side of the coil is bad.

Try shrinking yourself until you are really, really tiny or use a mirror and flashlight to see how the mechanism works as you operate it. You may find there is a weak spring or defective latch mechanism.

Don't take chances with brake issues. All anyone here can do is guess what the problem might be. Get it to a dealer or a reputable mechanic - have it towed if you're afraid to drive it - and have it diagnosed and repaired.

You will need to have the dealer program a new key.

Probably by replacement. For a 2000 Villager, this is a likely junkyard find.

A burning smell is an important symptom of something VERY WRONG. Get it towed to a repair shop, and get them to trace the wiring harness.

Have the filter inside the transmission changed. If that doesn't solve the problem then the clutch plates have worn too much or the front pump is not supplying the correct fluid pressures. That would need a complete rebuild to fix.
