It sounds like your starter. Sometimes when starters get old the armature and/or field windings swell when they get hot. The reason is rather complex but I can tell you this is the most likely problem and the only fix is to replace the starter.

What kind of what? Oil? Use whatever you have been using! It got you to 218,000 miles didn't it?
If you just bought it, use a good quality 10w 30 or 20w 40 oil. Best additive I've found is lucas. (works and does not harm anything)
If you have a 4,0 engine, likely you will still be driving it at 318,000 or 'till the body falls off!!!

Overheating

Pretty much self explanatory. the valve is called a heater control valve.
when replacing it don't pull on the hoses to the firewall or you can damage the heater core in the dashboard (a job you don't really want to do).
since there are several hoses there, make notes as to where the hoses go before removing them. Don't forget to put the small vacuum hose back on when finished. RE-fill the system with the heat on high and wait for the thermostat to open before closing it up.
If overheat was severe, replace the thermostat....they become unreliable after that happens.

My 96 Jeep Cherokee Country 4x4, 4.0 I6 will start

Three items come to mind...possible intermittent ignition switch malfunction, fuel pump or pump relay, or if they still use one on that year, bad ballast on left fender near hood hinge. What you need to determine is if there is fuel pressure, injector signal and spark when in no start.
Also could be a fault in the security system if equipped...seen broken wires in door boot do that at times. Nothing I could offer past ideas without actually being there and doing a ton of tests. Only "up" side is when you have finished, you will have a just about completely new electronics system! (I know, bad joke, but you will find the problem.) Note though that pin connectors do not look rusted when bad...generally just look blacker than others if you want to go over them again as well.
I seem to remember someone having a similar problem a while back and the cure was to move the asd relay to a cooler location BUT, don't remember for sure if ti was the exact same problem and, being electronic, too many problems can look exactly the same but be totally different when you get to the bottom of it!
Good Luck!

There are a few issues the gage not working could be, a bad fuel sender, a bad gage or a sort in the wires.

The speedometer is most likely a bad cable at 1 end or the other or the gear at the transmission. Or the speedo cluster itself is stripped.

Loud rattle coming from the bottom of engine.

Very hard to know without actually hearing the vehicle but,,,With what you describe, the cat/converter 'may' be making the sound. With the car off and engine cool, get under and give the cat/con a really give shove or hit.The insides of them do corrode and the internals make a very loud rattle. If this isn't the problem it will let you see if there is a loose exhaust mount that may also make a rattle.(The cat/con sound is like there is a very loose metal plate hitting something)Its actually the internals of the cat. that have broken loose and rattling inside it.Hope this helps

96 classic just started (about an hr ago) having a

This is a transmission problem. Those Cherokee's have the same motors and trannys as the Dodge Rams. I dont know if you have ever heard anything about them, but they are teribally natorious for failing between 150-200K.

You can try to do a fluid and filter on it. It may prolong the inevitable of having to have this transmission rebuilt or replaced in the future. You can also throw in some Lucus Oil, Transmission Treatment. It cost like $15 and can be found at Walmart. That company guarentees to help improve shifting and prolong the life of a transmission.

Another option is a tranny flush, most places charge about $100 for this. It totally cleans the fluid in the transmission, and unlike the fluid and filter, it even exchanges the fluids that are in the lines, and not just the pan. A tip on this though, is when you go in for the flush, you have to tell them to do a filter with it. Most places won't charge you for this, but if you don't ask for it, they wont do it. Also don't go to an ordinary auto shop for it, go to a transmission shop. Most mechanic shops don't touch trannys and actually ship your car to a tranny shop and jack up the prices for profit.

The only options beyond that are the rebuild and transplant. It is not something you want to ignore however, Once a tranny starts to go, there really is nothing you can do to stop it, however, taking the steps outlined above, can indeed slow things down.

Give them a try, and come on back if anything else come up....Good Luck....

Could be a neutral safety switch. This is an easy fix if this is the problem, The part is under $20.00 and takes a total of about a 1/2 hour to complete, including washing your hands when your done. The switch is located on the drivers side of transmission just above the trans pan and has a wire harness plugged into it. If you look at a picture of the part online it will be easy to spot. Good Luck !!!!

My jeep won't start. It will fire and turn over.

I hate when I say this because I can see people looking at me through the computer with one eyebrow raised.

Find a rubber mallet, or someone with a steel toed boot. Have them start hitting the tank (skid plate covering the tank usually works just fine) and try to start it at the same time. If they stop tapping and the Jeep stops running. It's the fuel pump. Most often times, it'll start right up. Sometimes keep running and buy some time.

Kindly let me know if it works so I stop getting that look.

Lowbeams do not turn on. Highbeams work.

Replace both low beam headlights. It's common to have one headlight burned out and you may not realize it for months. Then the other one goes out and "puff" you have NO low beams.
