Has there been any recent work done? That mioght help, and wehn was the last time it had a major tune up.

Anyways, things to check.
1. Do you have any air leaks?, when you step on the brake (power brakes) the engine takes a big gulp of air, if you already have some sort of air leak, the engine is nopt going to able to balance the air fuel mixture. With the whole engine buttoned up tight, so that everything in where it is supposed to be, try spraying some carb cleaner on places where their is a possible leak. The headers (intake and exhaust) can be one of those places. Try doing this when the engine is cold to avoid any possible ingnitions from the heat of the header. If you hear the engine rev up when you spray the cleaner, then you have an air leak of some kind.
2. Check your timing, rotor cap and points for wear or just your timing being off.
3. Check the plugs for gap and wear as well as being wet or showing any kind of improper wear. You can find plenty of pictures and examples of improper wear online or in any haynes or chiltons manual.
4. Misture. There is a lot to explain here, but with more information we could rule this out, try the other things first unless your fermiliar with your carb and then we can talk more about it.

Please try to provide as much info about your vehicel as possible whne posting. Recent work done, engine, carb/injection, modifications, is it a Cali version.

Remove cell covers, use multimeter to test cells. They work in series so the first one should read 2 VDC, next 4VDC and so on. If any cell doesn't jump in multiples of 2VDC until you get to 12VDC, they you have a bad battery cell. Replace battery. If cells are good, your battery should ready around 12.5VDC in off state, to check you alternator for charging, crank engine. Now your battery should read higher, around 13.5-14VDC. Replace if any doesn't not occur.

is the motor rotating the right way? did the wires get swiched when you fixed the plug?

does a 85 have a ECU unit ??? sounds like it could be the switching transistor thats either under the coil or inside the distributor should look like a black plastic casing with 3/4 wires running to it then to the coil look at this first as often motor runs ,stop for a quickie somewhere and jump back in and engine will not fire up ,classic symptons

not GRAND. ln what country USA has no such car and outside USA some Liberties are marked as Cherokee, ( a shame that) and bogus in my book. there are 2 fuse boxes. called JB one in the cab and one in the BAY (engine) and radio fuse is marked RADIO thee. our jeeps every one , remove the glove box users guide. turn to index, pick fuse page read. the guide matches just this one car,(options) and country no country told learn that cars are not the same ever. by country or by DRIVE-LINE, is it petrol or diesel.?
