My 4 wheel drive light comes on saying servec 4
Is it a an 85 or a95? I know of two switches on these vehicles, one is a four port vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case, you must unplug the vacuum line, and unscrew it from the transfer case. The other is on the front axle. The one on the transfer case is rather difficult to reach, it is hex shaped for a wrench. Unsure of size, it is large though. The one on the front axle is part of the axle shift motor, is unplugged and removed for replacement. I believe the one on the axle only serves to turn on the 4x4 indicator light.

I have a ticking noise.
It's probably a collapsed lifter. Oil sometimes helps but after time they wear out. And don't pump up to max specs especially when running.

Over heating and trouble idleing
Could be faulty Thermostat/ Leaky head gasket or bad water pump.. Check the oil pan for any antifreeze,if its OK the do a compression test on the cylinders to check the head gasket, and replace the Thermostat if its defective. and check for any antifreeze leaks on the ground. Good luck bro

I WAS THINKING OF PUTING A 4.0 INLINE 6 CYLINDER
The 4.0 engine has always been an option in Jeeps and there should be plenty of hardware available to get it in there. Problems you may encounter are matching the 4.0 with the existing transmission (may require replacing the driveline as a unit) and you will need to obtain the proper wiring and controls for the engine you are planning on using.
It's an old vehicle.... unless it's in unbelievably good condition it may not be worth the effort as for the cost and time involved it's likely you could just go out and buy a newer Jeep in good working order.
There are websites such as jeepforums.com that have tons of swap info. If you go ahead with the project likely joining or browsing there will be really valuable to you.
Good luck, regardless of what you decide!

How to install distributor on 1985 Jeep Cherokee
To replace the distributor in ANY engine, turn the crankshaft by hand till the timing mark on the pulley is aligned with 0 degrees on the scale. Mark the position of the #1 ignition wire on the housing to use as a reference with the cap removed. Lower the distributor into the engine and note how much the rotor turns away from the mark on the housing as you do that, they pull it back up and turn the rotor so as it goes down, the rotor aligns with the mark instead of moving away from it.
If the housing will not go down all the way, hold light pressure on it and have someone turn the crankshaft till the distributor drops down, then put the hold-down in place.
Using this method, it is possible to either be correct or 180 degrees away from where you want to be (50/50 chance). If you are "off", Lift the distributor and turn it 180 degrees and repeat install. You can avoid this by removing the valve cover and watching the #1 intake valve as you are turning the crank. The intake valve should just be closing before you reach "0" on the scale.
Ignition firing order should be stamped on the manifold and wires on cap are installed in the direction the rotor turns. The engine you have is essentially a Buick v6 if I remember correctly.

The engine turns on but dosent hold an idle
that year car doesn't have a lot of computer control of air mixture like newer cars do so i would look for the butterfly of that carb to be letting too much air thru while idleing. If just rebuilt did the butterfly get cleaned good? Is there a build up of deposits around the ends of it? This will let air thru and cause the problem you describe. Happened to me on a 1985 Toyota. If this helps please reply cause ithelps me continue to answer questions here and good luck
