The clutch seems fine, break fluid is ok (someone told me to check it that it affects the clutch), no slipping or grinding ever. I just went to go to work, started the car and went to move the shifter into Reverse and it wouldn't go. I wiggled, pushed, and shoved and finaly if I did it just right I could force it into place and backed up just fine. No problem getting the actual shifter to move to the 1,2,3,4,or 5 gear but when I go as I have for the last 4 year to slide the shifter to the right then back it just feels like it encounters something before it gets to the Reverse spot???? I took it to a local garage this morning and was told I need a new clutch...My bull sh....t alarm went off and it's sitting in the drive.
Any ideas?
Kindest regard
Mel
I had the EXACT same problem on my 01 PT. Very easy and inexpensive fix. There is a bushing that is located under the air box under the hood. It is in the shifter linkage. It falls apart from the heat of the engine and age. Mine was completely gone! The dealership didn't sell the bushing itself, they wanted to sell the whole arm for $$! I found this place that sells polyurethane bushing that work great. They sell you two, one for under the hood and one under the console. I just replaced the one under the hood.
All you have to take off is the air box, press the bushing into the sleeve then press it onto the pin and you are done. This place sells them as race parts that gives you a tighter shift.

what type of special engine coolant does the PT Cruiser take?
Anything as long as it says on the label somewhere; "phosphate free". You may be able to get long or standard life, but this is the only requirement. The Chrysler dealer obviously sells the right stuff and is surprisingly pretty competitively priced.

I was going down highway and the Trac Off and ABS Lights came on. They don't go off when hitting Trac button. The car doesn't seem to be driving any differently. The lights do come and go off involuntarily.
trac control & abs light staying on in dash on pt cruiser 2001 limited
well had same problem with my pt cruiser 2001, firstly there is no need to plug in computer under the dash for pulling abs error codes,
because the problem can be the cracked abs ring on the drive shaft/cv joint,
turn your steering all the way to left and ask your colleague to see if behind the tyre the abs ring is broken or cracked,
it is circular like a bracelete with grooves, then turn the steering to the right and repeat the inpesction,
if the abs ring is cracked then look on ebay or web for pt cruiser abs ring or kia abs ring, should cost about £5-£10 each
and a garage could heat it up with gas and hammer it into the drive shaft/cv joint for you for about £20-£30,
takes about 30min to 45mins, make sure the garage dont heat the cv booth kit rubber next to the abs ring when heating it up.
i heard you can only buy abs ring for front wheels and its not available separately for rear wheels,
so for rear you may need to buy the whole part it comes on
the front abs rings are easily visible when you turn the wheel to one side, the rear ones may not be visible as i have not seen them
so if the abs ring are good then it wil probably be one of the wheel sensors, in this case you you may look for a garage who will hook up
the computer and pull the code for you, be carefull if the say there are no abs error codes it means the sensors are ok and most of it
there is no need to buy abs sensor for any wheel when there are no error codes
on pt cruiser you can pull engine error codes yourself without a computer, just do the key dance on the ignition,
turn key until dash lights come on then switch off and then again turn key until dash lights come on then swithch off,
then turn key for third time again until dash lights come on , you will see engine error codes displayed then says done,
if there are no error codes it will say done, howevere these are engine error codes only not abs error codes,
abs error codes are pulled using abs diagnostic tool
incase its a faulty wheel sensor, will cost £45 at dealer or £20 from scrap, then a garage can removed the tyre and plug out the old sensor cable
and replace it with a new one, one end is easy to plug in but the other end has to be pushed in at an angle,
its about 30min job and garage can charge £20 or so
my pt cruiser is back on the road with just one abs ring replaced and it all cost me £30 alltogether

How do I change the thermostaton my 2002 PT Cruiser?
Hi, i have put together a step by step guide that will help you with this replacement job. Make sure the vehicle is in a cool state before starting this job.
* Drain some coolant into a clean container until the coolant level is below the thermostat housing.
* Remove the upper radiator hose connection from the thermostat housing.
* Loosen the housing bolts and remove the housing.
* Remove the gasket and scrape it carefully from the surface of the housing and the mounting surface on the engine. If the gasket remains on either of the surfaces, there will probably bea coolant leak after reassembly. Some engines use a rubber O-ring to seal a thermostat housing.
* Compare the size of the thermostat to the old one. They are of different sizes, types, and temperature ratings.
* The temperature rating is stamped on the sensing bulb on the bottom of the thermostat. The temperature bulb faces the block.
* When replacing a thermostat, be sure that the thermostat fits into the groove in the block or outlet housing. If the thermostat is installed upside down, the engine will overheat.
* Install the gasket.
* Reinstall the thermostat housing. Refill the system and run the engine or pressure test to check for leaks.
* When the engine has reached operating temperature make sure the thermostat opens.
* You should be able to see coolant circulating within the radiator.
* Another way of checking thermostat operation is to feel the top of the radiator hose or use a thermometer or multimeter with a temperature probe to confirm that the coolant is warming up.
* If the engine is overheating, but the top hose is still cool to the touch, the thermostat is stuck closed and must be replaced.
NOTE
When a paper gasket is used and the recess is in the thermostat housing, it is a good practice to position the thermostat into the recess and glue the gasket to hold it in place. If it falls out of its groove during installation, the outlet housing can be cracked or a coolant leak will result. Before tightening the water outlet housing, try to rock it back and forth to be sure it is flush. Housings are often cracked during this step.

replace EGR valve on a PT Cruiser
The valve is located just above where the engine and transmission seam meets. There is the metal exhaust gas tube with 2x8mm bolts and a fiber gasket. The EGR mounts to the cylinder head with 2 10mm bolts and a metal gasket. There are 2 vacuum lines that go to the control solenoid, a black plastic pod moounted under the throttle body. It clips into the TB mounting bracket, and has a 3rd vacuum supply line and 1 electrical connector.

My Pt cruiser 2002 will not start. It has power. This is what happened. I drove to Walmart. As I went to park the car, it was a hard turn and I had to turn my wheel all the way to left to get into the parking spot. Then I shut off the car and went into the store. After I came out, I preceded to leave and the car wouldnt start. It has power all lights on, battery lite on, oil light on, I have a full tank of gas and a current oil change is good too. Triple A came out and he gave it a jump and he checked the alternator and he said they are both very good and battery is new. He checked all my volts and he said thats good too. He said he thinks my car is in alarm mode cause he thought he heard a beeping faintly.
DOES YOUR CAR CRANKS OR IS COMPLETELY DEAD ONLY LIGHTS? IF IT CRANKS AND DOESN'T ENGINE RUN THEN IT IS EITHER THE ALARM ( IMMOBILIZER )SYSTEM ACTIVATED,OR THE IGNITION KEY FAILURE. IF YOU HAVE A SPARE IGNITION KEY TRY AGAIN ( THE KEY TO BE THE ONE WITH CHIP INSIDE ).IF IT IS COMPLETELY DEAD THEN YOU NEED THE ASSISTANCE OF A QUALIFIED PERSON TO DIS ACTIVATE THE ALARM AND CHECK ALSO YOUR SMART KEY AS WELL .
