NEWBIE: How difficult is it to change the oil and oil filter?
ok, this should be pretty basic but if you have any doubts buy a repair manual for your car from auto zone or checker or wherever you shop.
first off buy the new filter and the oil, that filter should look very similar to the one that is on your car, although keep in mind that the color and sometimes even shape can be a little different, but you have a basic idea of what to look for.
the oil filter will be on the motor itself, as well as the drain plug, usually both are easier to access from underneath the car. remove the oil filter counter-clockwise, some oil will leak out at this point and may be hot, so be careful, this may require a tool depending on how tight it is, the tool is usually relatively cheap. NEVER use an oil filter tool to tighten your filter, it is only for removal and may damage the filter adapter, when you put the new filter on tighten it as much as you can with just your hands, this should be plenty tight. you will also need a drain pan, preferrably sealable so you can take it with you when it is full to be dumped (usually checker/auto zone will have an oil dump).
next loosen and take out the drain plug, this will be on the bottom of the oil pan, which is the bottom part of the motor itself. when the oil stops (or reduces to a very fine flow being almost all gone), put the drain plug back in and tighten it down. add 3 or 4 quarts of oil, start the car and let it run for 15 to 20 seconds, this will fill up the oil filter, then check the oil and add as needed.
hope this helps.
