I had the same problem with a 2002 MAZDA MPV. Here's what you need to do.
First take off the decorative trim around the dashboard. for help, watch the beginning of this tutorial on changing your radio (which you aren't doing but it shows how to remove the trim).

Then there are three phillips screws holding in the gauge cluster (two on the bottom, one on the top). Unscrew these
Once you've freed the cluster, pull it out so you can access the three cables on the top of the unit. They have tabs on them and are a little difficult to pull out but with a little jiggling, they come free.
Adjust your steering wheel so it is a low as it will go in order to give you room to take out the cluster.
The back of the cluster has little sockets with TOSHIBA V-2 on them. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and twist counterclockwise to remove the lights.
NOTE: the plastic socket that you have removed is a separate piece from the bulb itself. You need to gently remove the bulbs from the sockets with your fingers or a pair of pliers. Be careful not to shatter the bulb in your hand
You have two options for replacing the light bulbs. You can buy replacement incandescent bulbs or buy LED equivalent bulbs.
I chose to replace them with LEDs because they were cheaper. However, when I switched them out, they were blinding (even when my dash was dimmed). Now, they have started to flicker when the radio is on and have all started to die one by one. It might be that they were from china or that the LEDs are drawing different current than the original lights. I'm currently switching back to the original style and hoping that fixes the problem. So if you do switch out to LED I recommend that you do not throw out your original incandescent ones if any are still good.
Note: When installing the LED lights, the polarity matters when inserting the socket base back into the cluster (i.e. they can be installed backwards). I don't know of any identifying marks to make sure you twist them back in correctly but make sure you test the console before re-installing the trim and screwing it in.
The bulb type that you need to replace it with is a #70 Mini Wedge lamp. #2721 lamps are also compatible.

Also as a side note, check to see if there are any parts recalls on your MPV. I've had a problem with my fan running long after I turn the car off and it drains the battery; apparently there's a recall for that. I also have a problem with my cruise control which has also been recalled.
5. Buzz sound, chime or doors will lock and unlock should be heard at this point signaling that the vehicle is now in programming mode. If not, wait 40 seconds and return to step 4.
6. All transmitters need to be programmed at this time, including the old ones. Push any button on the transmitter two times. A buzz sound, chime or doors locking and unlocking should be heard at this point signaling that the vehicle has accepted the new transmitter code. If there is only one transmitter, repeat this step two more times using the only transmitter. If there are two transmitters, repeat this step two more times using the second transmitter.
7. Push driver door frame button one time. Two buzz sounds, chimes or doors locking and unlocking 2 times should be heard at this point signaling successful programming.
